Hemmings.com Marketplace Weekly Round Up: a Record-Setting BMW, a Modern Z06 and a Big Healey

As one of the premier online destinations to buy and sell collectors cars, the Hemmings.com brings a seemingly never ending variety of vehicles to the market. This past week on Hemmings Auctions and Hemmings Make Offer we witnessed the highest-price ever paid for a BMW Isetta online along with an exceptionally clean 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 396 that was bid well beyond the reserve and even bested the high end of the recent market. A pair of drop-top British sports cars, both very well kept following restorations, also caught our attention, and both the 1966 Jaguar E-type OTS and 1967 Austin-Healey 3000 Mark III BJ8 featured inline six-cylinder engines. We round out our list this week with another open-top British sports car, but in this case, it’s a 1986 Lola T86/90 S2000 sports racer that looks every bit ready for some serious vintage racing.

For the week of February 18 through February 24, a total of 65 listings crossed the Hemmings Auctions block. Including Make Offer listings of previously ended auctions, a total of 48 cars were sold, resulting in a net 74% sell-through rate. An additional 18 cars were sold via direct Make Offer listings.

You can keep abreast of the latest consignments by subscribing to the daily Hemmings Auctions email newsletter.

1957 BMW Isetta 300 Convertible

1957 BMW Isetta 300 Convertible, bubble top, door open and roof down

Asking Price: $78,000

Selling Price: $79,800

Recent Market Range: $35,000-$60,000

BMW’s Isetta was born out of necessity for the then-struggling carmaker when its expensive V8 luxury models fell flat in the showroom. Microcars might not have universally broad appeal to collectors, but BMW’s Isetta models have enough critical mass of a cult following that they tend to perform well on the market. This rare “bubble top” 1957 BMW Isetta 300 Convertible sold at a value that marks a record for an Isetta sold online. If you remove the buyer’s fee and compare it to the highest known price for an Isetta at a live auction, this one sold for $1,000 more on Hemmings.com, $76,000 against $75,000. Charming, whimsical, and historically significant, the Isetta remains a hit with collectors.

1966 Jaguar E-type Series 1 4.2 Convertible

Reserve: $150,000

Selling Price: $168,001

Recent Market Range: $130,000-$190,000

It seems that the Hemmings.com Marketplace can’t get enough Jaguar E-types. This 1966 Jaguar E-type Convertible, comes from the later Series 1 era. While still offering the earlier design cues, such as Perspex-covered headlamps, this XKE featured the triple-carbureted 4.2-liter twin-cam six that delivered more torque than the earlier 3.8 and more power than the twin-carb 4.2-liter that followed. It also benefited from the fully synchronized four-speed manual transmission that arrived with the 4.2-liter engine. With a restoration from 2012 that had only seen 100 miles on the road since, this E-type garnered over 20,000 views and sold within expectations for what has been a strong market of late.

1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 396

1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 396, front quarter

Reserve: $60,000

Selling Price: $85,050

Recent Market Range: $57,000-$72,000

We’ve said it in these reports, and it bears repeating each time: Top condition cars will always perform better in the market. This 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 396, with its numbers-matching 402-cu.in. V8, featured a restoration that was performed between 2007 and 2010 and had been driven sparingly since. Photos provided by the seller showed not only excellent paint and interior, but an engine bay just as spotless and an undercarriage that appeared to have fresh paint and no corrosion to speak, not even any discernible surface rust. With almost 29,000 views and 345 watchers, bidders responded by pushing the net sale price 42% beyond the reserve and 18% clear of the going market rate.

1986 Lola T86/90 Sports 2000 Race Car

Asking Price: $40,000

Selling Price: $28,875

Recent Market Range: N/A

The Sports 2000 class was founded as a less-expensive way of going racing. Featuring mid-mounted engines and open cockpits with otherwise fully enclosed bodywork, the S2000 class attracted both professional and amateur competitions when the cars were new in the 1980s and 1990s. Today, S2000 remains a popular class in vintage racing. This 1986 Lola T86/90 sports racer was sold as a direct Make Offer listing with the seller noting some $60,000 invested, including a host of spares, such as tires, wheels, gearsets for the Hewland transaxle and more. There is almost certainly no such thing as “cheap” racing, but this Lola appears to be a reasonable investment toward getting into vintage racing.

1967 Austin-Healey 3000 Mark III BJ8

Reserve: $74,000

Selling Price: $78,750

Recent Market Range: $74,000-$95,000

Another six-cylinder British sports-car icon from the Sixties, this 1967 Austin-Healey 3000 Mark III BJ8 appeared to be in excellent condition, with the seller noting just over 2,000 miles since a “concours-quality restoration.” Indeed, this example looked as clean inside as it did outside, an observation that also extended to the engine bay and undercarriage. Indeed, in the photos provided by the seller, the underside of the car had plenty of shiny paint and only the very slightest corrosion on a handful of fasteners there. Final-year BJ8 models are among the most desired of the “Big Healeys,” and this one sold correctly as a post-auction Make Offer in what has been a strong market in recent years.

2003 Chevrolet Corvette Z06

2003 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 Hardtop Coupe, side view

Reserve: $32,000

Selling Price: $35,175

Recent Market Range: $26,000-$39,000

The Corvette was C5 was already a world-class sports car when Chevrolet brought back the vaunted Z06 moniker and bestowed it on the hottest fifth-generation Corvette with the lighter and stiffer hardtop coupe model, stuffed its engine bay with the high-performance LS6 V8, and installed a host of other go-fast parts. For 2003, the LS6 was rated at 405 horsepower. This Torch Red 2003 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 was listed by the selling dealer as being “original, with no modifications, no performance issues, and no leaks.” With just 22,473 miles on the odometer at the time of listing, it appeared to be in excellent condition overall and it sold nearer the higher end of the recent market range.
