Among BMW aficionados, the E30 generation 3 Series, available from 1984 through 1992, achieved a high water mark in terms of driver-focused performance. Beyond the race-ready M3 homologation special, the 325i models equipped with the 2.5-liter engine are noted for their brisk acceleration and precise handling.
Given the car’s enthusiast appeal, many of them were modified over the years both by original buyers and subsequent owners. The E30 was common enough that not too many were preserved and with parts costs rising and availability shrinking, restored examples are not common at all. This 1990 BMW 325i coupe currently listed on Hemmings Auctions has been restored by the experts at Korman Autoworks of Greensboro, North Carolina. Importantly, the little coupe has been in the hands of the same owner who bought it new in the spring of 1990.
BMW had already earned a solid reputation for building sport sedans by the 1980s. Plenty of people give them credit for essentially inventing the segment with the 2002 in the late 1960s. What made the E30 325i such a thrill was its combination of six-cylinder power, a sub-3,000-pound curb weight and an independent suspension tuned for neutral handling and plenty of feedback for the enthusiast driver.
Under the hood of this 325i is the 2.5-liter version of the M20 SOHC inline-six engine. With Bosch Motronic engine control that combined fuel injection and ignition control in a single unit, the M20 was rated at 168 horsepower and 164 lb-ft of torque. Peak power occurred just before 6,000 rpm, making the engine a rev-happy machine for drivers.
Most would agree that this high-revving engine is best experience with a manual transmission and the five-speed in this Southern car seems ideally suited to getting the most out of the BMW’s inline-six. The seller notes that, as part of the documented work done at Korman, the engine received a new timing belt and water pump along with a host of other underhood components, such as a serpentine belt, radiator hoses and clamps, an oil pan gasket, timing cover gasket, thermostat and more. He indicates a clean bill of health with excellent compression and no smoke or leaks.
The interior of this airbag-equipped E30 was also given a refresh, including new tan leather seating surfaces for the bucket seats. Part of the appeal of the E30 remains its driver-centric cockpit, with traditional white needles on black gauges, including a large speedometer and tachometer centered in front of the driver. The interior in this example also appears to be in excellent condition.
Despite using the term “restoration,” the seller indicates that the Glacier Blue Metallic finish is original and has simply been well cared for. There are a couple of minor scratches noted in the images, but overall, this Bimmer looks ready to roll.
The factory “bottle cap” style wheels also look to be in excellent shape. Recent brake service is also indicated in the documentation. The seller shares that the shocks and bushings were replaced, front and rear, in 2018. Of course, those chassis components being in top nick are essential for drivers looking to get the most out of an E30.
BMW might have started its reputation for building sport sedans in the 1960s, but that legend was cemented with the six-cylinder 325i from the late 1980s and early 1990s.
