The latest episode of the Hemmings series, TESTED Muscle, brought to you by American Collectors Insurance, just dropped! In this episode, Mike Musto presents what is arguably the first true factory sleeper and one of the rarest in existence, a four-speed 1962 Pontiac Catalina 421 Super Duty.
Pontiac produced the limited-production Catalina 421 Super Duty to dominate the NHRA’s quarter mile drag strips and shock the competition during NASCAR oval races, of which it won 30 out of 52 during the Grand National series in 1961. Pontiac’s 421 Super Duty V8 was officially rated at 405 bhp from the factory, but real output was closer to 465 horses.
If you’ve never seen or experienced a Catalina 421 Super Duty, you’re not alone. Since it wasn’t intended solely for street use, only around 177 Catalina Super Duty models were fitted with the 421, with some sources stating that number is closer to 130. It packed a punch like you wouldn’t believe, as Musto demonstrates in the below video.

Hemmings’ new video series titled TESTED Muscle is a six-episode YouTube series that features Mike Musto in his element, behind the wheel of American muscle cars from the 1960s through the early ‘70s. Each episode of TESTED Muscle pulls an original/restored muscle car out of the garage and treats it to a proper full-fledged review, showing how the classic cars should look, feel, and sound, much like a new car review but for a vintage ride.
The series kicked off with Musto exploring a supercharged 1963 Studebaker Avanti R2 and discussing whether it was a true muscle car or a misunderstood design exercise from an automaker that was better known for pedestrian-style transportation. In the second episode, Musto looked beyond the outrageous styling of a 1978 Pontiac Trans Am and delved into the experience of driving the “Screaming Chicken.” The third video presents the full driving experience of a 1969 Camaro Z/28, a pony car built for the purpose of dominating corners on the street and in Trans Am racing.
