News about Tesla entering the Indian market has started surfacing online once again. This time, we feel the US-based electric car manufacturer will make its debut as we have been hearing a lot about the new policy for electric vehicles. According to the new policy, the Indian government will allow automakers to import up to 8,000 electric cars per year at a reduced import duty of 15%. This makes Tesla’s India entry almost certain. Tesla is expected to bring in their Model 3 and Model Y SUV to the Indian market. Before its official launch, here we have a detailed walkaround video of the upcoming Model Y EV.
The video has been shared by Bunny Punia on his YouTube channel. Bunny got his hands on the Model Y, which is expected to come to India later this year. The Model Y is actually a beefed-up SUV version of the Model 3 sedan. The video starts by talking about the exterior design. In terms of design, the SUV gets a very clean look with no major muscular lines accentuating the SUV look.
The front grille is completely closed, like in any EV. There is an open lower air dam though. The fog lamps are placed on either side of the air dam. We see the Tesla logo on the bonnet. The headlamps look sleek and are LED units. Coming to the side profile, we see cameras integrated into the fender. The ORVMs are electrically adjustable, and the flush-fitting door handles can also be seen here.
The car gets a frameless door design, and the sloping roof gives it a coupe-ish look. This design doesn’t affect the cabin space or boot in any way. The rear has clear lens LED tail lamps with a clean-looking bumper.
The video mentions that Tesla is offering the Model Y in three versions. There is a single-motor version (RWD), a dual-motor variant seen in the video, and a performance-oriented version of the dual-motor version, which can do 0-100 kmph in just 3 seconds.
The interior of the Tesla Model Y looks extremely clean. There are no buttons on the dashboard or center console. Almost every function in the car is controlled from the infotainment screen installed. The doors and the power window buttons can be seen on the door. Even to adjust the ORVMs, you’ll have to access the ORVM settings on the screen.
The AC vents, glove box, and other features are all controlled through this unit. There are two wireless chargers on the center console, several deep storage compartments for phones and other items, heated seats and steering, glass roof, and many more features. The cabin feels extremely spacious both at the front and rear. The front seats are electrically adjustable.
Bunny finds the cabin spacious and mentions that 5 people can fit in if they want to, otherwise 4 people can travel comfortably. The rear seats get a recliner function, reading lamps, and rear AC vents. The boot space in the Model Y is quite large, offering over 800 liters of boot space. There is more space under the carpet as the batteries are stored under the floor.
There is no spare wheel, which also frees up more space in the boot. Other than the storage compartment at the rear, there is a storage compartment under the bonnet as well. The ex-showroom price of the Model Y in Thailand is around 45 lakh INR. With the new policies in place, we can expect a similar type of pricing for the Model 3 and Model Y, which will compete against cars from manufacturers like BYD, Kia, and Hyundai in the Indian market.
