Audi Recalls Over A Dozen U.S. Models Over An Airbag That May Not Deploy

  • The passenger airbag could switch into a fail-safe mode and deactivate.
  • Owners will be alerted to a potential issue through a warning light on the dash.
  • The recall impacts 91 vehicles in the U.S. market.

Audi is recalling 17 different models in the United States because of an issue with the pins inside the control module of the passenger seat occupant detection system, which may prevent the airbag from deploying.

The recall notice issued through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reveals that the pins of the seat occupant detection system may not have been soldered to the circuit board correctly. This could cause an interruption between the system’s control module and the airbag control module. Vibrations may also cause the pins to lose contact with the circuit board. If the airbag control unit detects a fault, it will switch into fail-safe mode and deactivate the passenger airbag, increasing the risk of injury for an individual in this seat.
