General Motors announced on Monday that it will be moving from its riverfront home at the Renaissance Center to a new high-rise building called “Hudson’s” in the heart of downtown Detroit, just a few blocks away from its last location.
GM’s global headquarters has been stationed at the Renaissance Center for over 20 years. Its logo is seen glowing on top of one of the towers, making the location a recognizable part of Detroit’s skyline since 1996. According to the company’s website, the move to the RenCen was “a milestone that helped spark a downtown renaissance.”
GM’s logo will remain a prominent part of the Detroit skyline by moving its headquarters to the Hudson’s, which will be the second-tallest skyscraper in Detroit. The new location will reportedly offer more collaborative areas for employees, and the extra space needed to host events and display more vehicles.
“It’s important to all of us at GM that we continue to call Detroit our home for a long time to come,” CEO Mary Barra said at a press conference.
Although a couple of automotive manufacturers are somewhat close, GM is the only one of Detroit’s big three automakers that calls Motor City its home for its headquarters. GM also has a technical center located in Warren, Michigan. Ford Motor’s headquarters is in nearby Dearborn, Michigan, while Stellantis’ Chrysler company placed its main North American office in Auburn Hills, Michigan, around 30 miles away from the Motor City. It’s worth mentioning that Ford is working on rehabilitating the historic Michigan Central Station, a former rail station in downtown Detroit, to be a hub for tech workers and software engineers
Over the next year, GM will work with real estate firm Bedrock, led by billionaire Dan Gilbert, on the future redevelopment of the iconic Renaissance Center. In the meantime, GM has entered into an initial 15-year, multi-level lease for the two top office floors of the Hudson’s, as well as space to showcase its vehicles at street level. Details regarding differences in cost and square footage between the two locations were not disclosed.
“From the beginning, we understood the significance of the Hudson’s to our city, which is why we designed it to be more than just a building,” Gilbert stated during a news conference. “We built these buildings to be a destination celebrating Detroit’s journey over the past century, and strengthening that momentum for generations to come. Most importantly, we wanted to be a place that would attract the best companies and the best talent from all over the world. Who knew that it would attract the one from around the corner here?”
