The amount of time it takes to charge an EV continues to decline thanks to advancements in DC Fast Charging. While some EVs have managed to bring the charging time from 10-80 percent to around 20 minutes, Polestar has announced that it has reached a new milestone, by reducing that time to only 10 minutes.
Polestar and fast-charging battery pioneer StoreDot have demonstrated the implementation of StoreDot’s Extreme Fast Charging (XFC) technology in a car for the first time, which charged a Polestar 5 prototype from 10-80% in just 10 minutes. The prototype saw a consistent charge rate starting at 310 kW and rising to a peak in excess of 370 kW at the end of charging.
The 77 kWh battery pack, which can be increased to at least 100 kWh, could add 200 miles of range to a mid-sized electric car in 10 minutes.
StoreDot’s groundbreaking XFC technology employs silicon-dominant cells that match the energy density of cutting-edge NMC cells and eliminates the need for specialized cooling systems in vehicles. The innovative design of the XFC battery’s modules not only enhances mechanical properties and cooling efficiency but also maintains or reduces the overall weight. Additionally, high recyclability and easy maintenance are central features of the pack’s design.
