The battle between the No. 1 and No. 2 picks in the 2024 WNBA Draft did not disappoint the sold-out crowd in LA. Caitlin Clark and the Fever came out on top, getting their first win of the season over Cameron Brink and the Sparks.
A sold-out crowd saw Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever triumph over the hometown Los Angeles Sparks, 78-73.
Despite the defeat, the Sparks got good games from their top players. Dearica Hamby had a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds, Cameron Brink had 15 points and nine boards and Rickea Jackson continues to score, registering 16 points off the bench. The Sparks are now 1-3 on the season.
Brink got going immediately offensively, something she hadn’t done in previous games. She started the opening quarter going 3-for-5 from the field, scoring 10 points and helping Los Angeles take an early 14-7 lead.

Not to be outdone by the rookie, Dearica Hamby was explosive for the rest of the first half, leading the team in points, rebounds and assists. With the Fever struggling, shooting 33 percent from the field, the Sparks held a comfortable 22-15 lead after one. Both teams settled down a bit during the second quarter, exchanging baskets, with the Sparks extending their lead to 11 heading into the halftime break, leading 45-34.
Indiana woke up to start the third quarter, going on an 11-0 run with Los Angeles unable to buy a basket. Rickea Jackson ended the run with a 3-pointer at the top of the key, but at that point, the Fever were very much back into the game. Brink found herself in foul trouble yet again, registering four fouls early in the second half. Her sitting was one of the reasons the Sparks’ offense stalled and the Fever were able to begin their comeback.
Despite Los Angeles’ offensive woes, they were up by three with 10 minutes to go in the game. With Brink back on the floor, the Sparks offense showed signs of life. Still, Indiana was able to take control midway through the quarter.
After a huge Clark 3-pointer, the Fever bought themselves some breathing room and led 72-66 with 2:27 left to go. LA would not go away quietly, however, as Brink responded with a 3 of her own, and following a Lexie Brown pull-up, the Sparks got within two points. That’s when Clark did what great players do and hit a dagger 3-pointer from 29 feet out to put the Sparks away for good. Kelsey Mitchell then hit a pair of free throws and the game was done.

Both the Sparks and Fever are young teams working on developing identities while trying to win games. One team had to win on Friday. The Fever did enough right to get the victory, while the Sparks did enough wrong to lose.
LA will have to move on quickly as they face the Dallas Wings on Sunday. The Fever have an even quicker turnaround, competing against the Las Vegas Aces on Saturday.
