One of the topics at the forefront of league-wide discussion is who will become the next head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers. Despite the NBA Finals series involving the Boston Celtics and Dallas Mavericks, it’s been a highly discussed storyline during broadcasts.
The Lakers were reportedly set to hire J.J. Redick as their next head coach based on the reporting of The Athletic’s Shams Charania. There was a significant shift in the situation.
One day later, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported that UConn head coach Dan Hurley is being considered an option. He even went as far as to say a discussion will take place on Friday regarding “the framework about what a deal would look like and what a Dan Hurley-Lakers partnership would look like in LA.” He added that Los Angeles has been “extremely aggressive” in trying to hire Hurley.

Hurley had even reportedly informed his UConn players that he was discussing potentially becoming their next head coach with the Lakers. After leading the program to back-to-back NCAA national men’s championships in 2023 and 2024, it would surely require a highly sought-after situation for him to consider leaving the program he’s built.
There still are other candidates the Lakers could turn to in their ongoing search for a head coach, including established NBA assistant coaches such as New Orleans Pelicans’ James Borrego, Boston Celtics’ Sam Cassell, and Denver Nuggets’ David Adelman. However, hiring Hurley remains the top priority for Los Angeles.

There isn’t time for the Lakers to waste if they want to revamp their team and contend for a championship with LeBron James. He can decline his player option and enter free agency as well, making it essentially an unwritten requirement that for them to get him to commit to stay, surely, he’ll need to be on board with their decision.
The Lakers faced frustrations with Darvin Ham before firing him after being swept by the Denver Nuggets in the first round of the playoffs. Getting the right coach in the fold is an outcome that comes with a lot of anticipation from the players on the team.
