This week on the Lambcast, we step into the Wayback Machine and take a trip to the Me Decade. Disco was still king, Sequels were becoming more and more typical, and nostalgia for the Beatles was the driving force of a couple of movies on our lists. We expanded the guest list this week to include some people who have first hand memories of 1978, and we got at least 26 different films to share with each other and with you.
Todd Liebenow of Forgotten Films discovered that on his own project, 1978 may have had the greatest number of entries. Dave Anderson from Free Kittens Movie Guide remembers the films he saw at a single theater when he was just a lad. Howard Casner as always, sticks to what he thought were the best pictures of the year. Aaron Neuwirth from Out Now Aaron and Abe, made an effort to watch ten films from 1978 that he had not seen before. James Wilson just tossed darts at random targets but found some rewarding bullseyes, and the host went to left field.
Some of the names that came up repeatedly included Elliot Gould, John Williams, Richard Widmark and Jerry Goldsmith. Joe Dante was bubbling under the surface and everyone debated whether Alan J. Pakula is an auteur or a journeyman. We got Pineapple Kiosked several times but all the films did get a chance to be discovered individually.
There was a brief discussion of the stars of the 70s who are still working today and we skipped a game because we had done so many films, we simple ran out of time.
