Over 13,000 Corvette C8s Might Have Sticky Seatbelts

  • GM first became aware of a potential issue in late February.
  • Impacted cars were manufactured between September 18, 2023, and March 22, 2024.
  • The recall comes a few months before production of the 2025 model starts.

Many would agree that the Chevrolet Corvette is a compelling, bang-for-your-buck performance option, but even the best slip up sometimes. Presently, there are over 13,000 examples across the United States that might be impacted by faulty seatbelts.

General Motors has disclosed that certain 2024MY and 2025MY Corvettes might encounter a driver and/or passenger seatbelt retractor issue, potentially getting locked in a stowed position. This glitch renders the seatbelt inaccessible. While wise owners would opt against driving their ‘Vette under such circumstances, GM highlights that those who disregard the malfunction and drive without a seatbelt heighten their risk of injury in a crash.

The issue has been triggered by two internal components of the seatbelt retractor that may be slightly out of specification, meaning that when the belt is fully extended to engage the Automatic Locking Retractor (ALR) function, it could get locked in the stowed position.

A total of 13,464 Chevy Corvettes are involved in the recall. These cars were built between September 18, 2023, and March 22, 2024.

On February 26, 2024, a GM engineer submitted the fault to GM’s Speak Up For Safety program after a quality alert was issued by the company’s plant after observing the seatbelt issue. GM opened an investigation on April 9 and has received 56 field complaints that may be related to the condition. There are no reports of field incidents, accidents, or injuries related to this issue.

Dealerships were notified of the recall on June 6, 2024, while owners will be alerted from July 22. GM has instructed its dealers to replace the driver and/or passenger seatbelt retractors free of charge.

Interestingly, while the recall notice issued through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration mentions 2025MY Corvettes, regular production of the 2025 model isn’t scheduled to begin until September 9. When it does launch, it will bring with it three new colors.
