One day first-year Nanakura Rin meets second-year Kitahama Eiji, who claims to be the president and only member of the drama club she intends to join. When they reach the club room and it’s packed with members, including the real president, Eiji admits he was merely putting on an act. It’s a good way to start a story that’s all about putting on acts in order to convey genuine feelings—in Rin’s case, affection for her senpai.
The Nanakura Rin character is actually at least five characters in one this week: normal, tsundere, impish, spoiled, and cool/aloof. This gives Hayami Saori leave to break into multiple voices, and I’m definitely not mad about that, but also gives the animators opportunity to design five distinct Rin designs, with surely more on the way as she expands her repertoire.

While her “acts” entertain Eiji, he (for the moment) believes them to be just that: acts. I’ll give him a pass for now, as Rin represents his first taste of romance, and she’s doing a good job camouflaging her feelings in those performative personas. All the while, she’s collected his number, tenderly holds his hand while he’s asleep, and the two are virtually inseparable buds at school.
While the episode is replete with examples of Rin worrying about Eiji in various ways, one of the most overt instances is when she has to do a blind taste test, and under no circumstances does she want to pick anyone other than Eiji’s dish. She gets a little too invested in the taste test and ends up eating Eiji and the other lad’s lunches. But when she guesses Eiji’s food correctly, she can’t hide her elation.

Rin even tries to look cuter for Eiji, irrespective of her personas, but simply as Rin. It’s a little heartbreaking that he thinks it’s merely a prank, one that happened to occur the same day he had epic bed head. The reactions from other classmates on the periphery to their lively banter and flirtation make it clear everyone (except the two of them) know they’re on the fast track to coupledom, if they aren’t one already.
I’m calling an audible and switching from 2.5 Dimensional Seduction to Pseudo Harem. I arrived at this decision after watching three episodes of the former, followed by this first episode of the latter.
Reasons include: Rin has more depth; Kitahima Eiji is a lot more palatable; there isn’t a real harem in play; I prefer the art style; Rin and Eiji (Hayami Saori and Okamoto Nobuhiko) are cute as hell and have effortless chemistry; et cetera, et cetera. I’m looking forward to catching up!
