The morning after Saki’s attempted yobai, both she and Yuki oversleep. Yuki goes to work, is intrigued by a book he’s stocking, and Shiori asks him if he wants to catch the movie adaptation after work. You can tell from Shiori’s demeanor that she’s been meaning to find an opportunity to ask her dear kohai out.
Yuki buys Shiori a Diet Coke and a bucket of caramel popcorn for them to share. The movie, which we catch some moments of, has a totally different style from the show proper, which was a neat stylistic change of pace. The whole movie-going scene also captures the fun of sitting next to someone and watching their reactions as you also watch the movie.
Yuki walks Shiori home, and she buys him a drink from a vending machine on the way. Then she gets very serious, like she’s about to tell him she likes him. I mean, she kinda does, by saying he’s fun and kind to her. But then she says she has six months to live. Yuki recognizes it as a line from the movie, and responds appropriately. Shiori seemed ready to take his hand and even steal a kiss, but the stupid light-up talking vending machine ruined the moment!
You could also say that Shiori didn’t pursue things any further that night because she could tell Yuki wasn’t on the same wavelength. That’s confirmed the next day when Saki asks if he’s dating her and he says they’re just co-workers. That may be true, but it seems Shiori might want to be more, and he’s just not seeing it. That day, Saki goes to the bookstore for a study guide and the book version of the movie.
Saki gets to meet Shiori and witness how she flirts with Yuki. Shiori gets to meet Saki and realizes what a cutie she is, and calls her “the real deal.” You’d think healthiest scenario for everyone, considering Yuki and Saki are stepsiblings by marriage, is for Shiori and Yuki to date. But as this show is so much more mature and nuanced than anything with “stepsister” in the title has any right to be, it’s just not that simple.
