Were it not for Aqua, Akane doesn’t think she’d be here. So it stands to reason she wants to save him. It’s not love per se, simply obligation, and recognition that whatever else he is, Hoshino Aqua is a good guy. So even when he tells her he’s trying to act his way to the top so he can kill someone, I don’t doubt her for a second when she looks back at him with a darkened stare and says she’ll help him kill. Because again, she owes him her life.
We get several extended Ruby sightings this week, including her visiting the rehearsal studio to see her brother, only to learn he’s been leaving every night with Akane. Since he hasn’t been coming home until midnight, her friend Minami assumes it’s because they’re getting busy. But it’s Ruby’s turn to flash a dark expression, insisting Aqua isn’t the kind of guy to risk getting a girl pregnant … and if he was, she’d kill him herself.
Now that the revised script is in their hands with barely any time at all to rehearse, Melt is struggling and feeling the pressure (and gets mocked by one of the more established theater actors who tried to get Minami’s number and actually did get Ruby’s before Kana and Mem blocked him, thank goodness). But a war is quickly unfolding between Akane and Kana. Akane lashes out, then Kana produces proof she inspired Akane to get into acting in the first place.
While they have to be held back from each other backstage, on the stage they’re rearing for a fight with their stage weapons. When asked who he thinks is the better actor, Himekawa Taiki says it’s hard to say and rude to rank them, as they are both so different in their approaches and yet so good. He only says Arima will have the edge in this play because he’ll be backing her up.
The day of the premiere arrives, the two collaborating writers meet in IRL, the Sweet Today actors come to see, and Ruby is excited to be surrounded by so many big shots. Akane and Kana confront each other once more, this time in full costume and makeup as their Tokyo Blade characters. They each admit they’ve been looking forward to acting with each other, acknowledging their skills, but neither is willing to back down from their belief that they’re the best, and they’ll be the one to shine brightest.
It remains to be seen who will prevail, and a lot will depend on how the audience absorbs their performances. Lest we forget, were it not for the rewrites, Akane wouldn’t have had a chance due to her character’s modified and reduced role. But now it looks like they’ll be on more equal footing in terms of stage time and significance to the story.
All the while, Aqua vomits and dry heaves in the dressing room in his costume, determined to fight through his Ai trauma and capitalize on the emotional acting coaching he and Akane he’s been getting from Gotanda. If his goal is to keep rising, he can’t screw up here.
