An intriguing Porsche was recently snapped being unloaded off a plane at the Los Angeles International Airport and it’s left enthusiasts scratching their heads about what exactly they’re looking at. So, what’s the story behind this mystery Porsche?
The fact the car has been flown into LAX in August strongly suggests it is heading to Monterey Car Week, where it will join some of the world’s most expensive exotics. Visually, the car shares a lot in common with the 993-generation Porsche 911 GT1 Strassenversion, so much so that many online had initially thought that’s precisely what this is.

However, unlike the 993 911 GT1, this car does not have a large fixed rear wing and instead features a large ducktail spoiler. Additionally, it has large air intakes behind the doors not featured on the GT1, and the front end also has some differences, including a larger front grille and slimmer lights running horizontally below the main headlamps. Evidently, it is not a GT1 Strassenversion.
Some have speculated that this is the car recently teased by UK engineering firm RML, and while it does share some similarities, it is quite different overall.
Jalopnik reached out to Porsche about the model and was told the carmaker didn’t have any knowledge about it. Porsche could be playing dumb, and there’s absolutely a possibility this is a one-off commissioned by an uber-wealthy client of the German marque. It could be based on a current 911 that has been completely re-bodied, or it may be a restored and updated older Porsche that’s been brought into the modern world but takes inspiration from the GT1.
Whatever the case may be, this remarkable Porsche is bound to have been extremely expensive to build and will no doubt be a highlight of Monterey.
