Kazuhiko gets out of bed to sample the delicious mountain sourced tap water when he notices Yanami is also still awake. She can’t officially root for anyone in the Lemon-Mitsuki-Chihaya triangle, but she’s closer to Lemon. Even though she thinks Lemon should have told Mitsuki how she felt a year ago or earlier, she’d likely still support Lemon stealing him from Chihaya.
She says that full well knowing Lemon, undisputably a Good Girl, would never, ever do that. But that doesn’t mean she wouldn’t think of doing it, which she reveals she does when Kazuhiko chats with her after her midnight run. As expected, she cries as much about how selfish and awful that would be than she cried about the fact he’s with another girl.
And once again Wakayama Shion knocks it out of the frikkin’ park, delivering a powerful emotional performance without ever taking it too far, aided by the shows usual terrific character acting and subtle expressive animation. While I was a little frustrated in the moment that Kazuhiko said and did nothing to comfort her, in hindsight all he really needed was to sit there and be there for her.
He was, and the next morning when Kazuhiko (borrowing her t-shirt since he didn’t bring a change of clothes) is about to head off with the others, Lemon, her eyes now dried, assures him that she’ll talk to both Mitsukia and Chihaya and settle things, so they can all move forward.
To Lemon’s surprise, Chihaya arrives at the station just as she’s about to leave. Turns out she used the GPS one last time to track Lemon. That’s a rather devious trick, but there’s every indication that Chihaya had a good reason to do it.
Chihaya wanted to be alone with Lemon and talk with her just as much as Lemon wanted to. I’ll just note that the scene in which they meet is so bright and colorful and idyllic, you just know things are going to work out between them.
Lemon relies on Kazuhiko again as her escort to a playground where she’s going to meet with Mitsuki late at night. The playground is special, as they once played there as little tykes. When Lemon mentions how small the tires seem to have grown, you can really feel the eight years of history between them.
In what may be the most moving and bittersweet scene of the series to date, Lemon and Mitsuki take a trip down memory lane, from when the athletic, rowdy Lemon hurt her knee and chatted up the meek bookworm Mitsuki, and basically never left his side, until middle school when she started to shine even brighter, drew more friends to her orbit.
Mitsuki thought she was drifting away from him, but still helped her get into the same high school as him. One reason was that everyone in her family was expected to get into a good school and have a productive life, but mostly she just wanted to go to the same school as him. He admits he wanted that too.
When Mitsuki admits he did like Lemon just as she liked him, she sheds bittersweet tears just as the moon emerges from the clouds to backlight her. Even if he’s unavailable now, just knowing it wasn’t one-sided makes her understandably very happy.
And while she still likes him, she’s rooting for him and Chihaya, whom she thinks is a good match for him as they share the same goals for the future. After Kazuhiko insists Mitsuki walk her home, all Lemon asks for to put a bow on their romance that never was is to hold his hand, for the first and last time.
When The first morning of the new term, Kazuhiko soon encounters Chihaya, who greets him as a friend. He brings up her use of GPS and she admits she’s actually a “bad girl.” Lemon hurdles them from behind and enthusiastically greets them, then she and Chihaya strike up a friendly chat like old friends.
Kazuhiko asks Mitsuki (bringing up the rear) what’s up with those two. Now that they’ve had a talk (which I wish we could have seen) the two have now hit it off. Chihaya now knows she doesn’t have to fear Mitsuki being stolen, while Lemon knows Mitsuki has a keeper in Chihaya. In the middle of all of this is Kazuhiko, someone who apparently still needs to be told by Mitsuki they’s friends.
He also momentarily expects/hopes that when Anna starts talking about getting a face-saving substitute fake boyfriend, she’s going to ask him. I saw it coming from miles away that she was going to ask him…to ask another guy—in this case Mitsuki! He may still be a “background” character, but it’s clear he’s become the vital “glue guy” for this group.
