Christmas Day is one of, if not the biggest, NBA game days of the year.
It’s a day when more fans and non-fans can watch the games to see the veterans, young stars and leading teams in the league.
Five games were featured in the gameday lineup with some being more entertaining than others – but across the board, the NBA’s line-up was a huge success.
Timberwolves get the last laugh on Christmas Day
One of the reasons why the Dallas Mavericks hosting the Minnesota Timberwolves were chosen as a Christmas Day game was because it’s a rematch of the Western Conference Finals. It is a game that also features stars like Anthony Edwards, Kyrie Irving and Luka Doncic.
The decision to make Timberwolves at Mavericks a Christmas Day game was slammed by NBA casuals and analysts/sports talking heads. Among those who slammed the game was the Ringer’s sports host and analyst Bill Simmons, who made a joke in his shade.
“Should the NBA flex the Timberwolves out of Christmas? Not sure we need their sullen, awkward energy — we can get that from our own families.”
While it might be funny to Simmons, it would be the Timberwolves who got the last laugh.
The Timberwolves jumped to a 61-40 at halftime and then a 94-68 lead going into the fourth quarter. Despite the Mavericks’ attempt to come back, the Timberwolves would get the 105-99 win on the road.
Edwards would score a team-high 26 points and account for eight rebounds, five assists, two steals and one block. Power forward Julius Randle nearly had a triple-double by accounting for 23 points,10 rebounds and eight assists.
Irving did all he could to get Dallas the win as he scored 39 points shooting 14-of-27 from field goals. It didn’t help the Mavericks that Klay Thompson was limited by the Timberwolves’ defense and Doncic was out with an injury 12 minutes into the game.
Minnesota was shooting a field-goal percentage of 46.5% and a three-point shooting percentage of 43.8%. The defense played well enough to make haters like Simmons eat his words.
Minnesota Timberwolves are a big deal
It has been a tough start for the Timberwolves, who are playing their first season without Karl-Anthony Towns. Minnesota traded the talented big man for a package deal to the New York Knicks that included Randle. This was to help space the floor with Edwards and center Rudy Gobert.
Whether it is the right move remains to be seen. The Timberwolves are still looking for stability as Edwards and Randle are playing well, but the rest of the team has consistency issues. Their win over the Mavericks shed a three-game losing streak after winning six of the seven games before that.
Overall, the entire Western Conference has some issues with several teams like the Denver Nuggets, the Los Angeles Clippers and the Phoenix Suns not playing to their full potential yet. The Timberwolves are going to be a dangerous team once they do find their rhythm and consistency.
There is a reason why they went to the Western Conference Finals last season. Minnesota could easily accomplish it again this season.
