Blue Box’s second cour begins with Chinatsu leaving the Inomata residence for the next week for basketball nationals. Taiki gives her a book she forgot, sees that her anklet is still intact, and suggests she assign a new wish on it. Now that she’s reached nationals, she should wish to win them. Taiki sends her good vibes, but she wants physical contact in the form of a high-five.
It’s only later when Taiki realizes Chinatsu thinks he lied about going in a group when he only went with Hina, thanks to Kyou. At the badminton nationals, he encounters Karen again, and learns that she even knows that he an Chii live together. When she teases him with the chance to talk to Chii on her phone and he only gets the ringtone, it confirms for her that Chii is his crush.
Taiki may see Haryu and Karen as this perfect, mature couple, but this week Karen breaks that illusion, telling him that they got to where they are through hard work, struggle, and overcoming embarrassment and overthinking. Karen first narrates how they came to be a couple, then we spend some time inside Haryu’s head to hear his side. Karen once sucked at swimming, but didn’t care how bad she looked, as long as she got better. Haryu helped her, and they grew closer over the years.
Hyoudou warns Haryu before their match that if he can’t steal a game from him, he may not be back in the nationals next year. Well, thanks in no small part to Karen’s presence and cheering, Haryu does manage to find another gear and steal that one game. He doesn’t win the match, but it’s not a total loss either. Hyoudou tells him he genuinely had fun competing against him.
Karen only confessed to Haryu when he made a gesture that made it so that she couldn’t hold back anymore; offering her his second-grade journal full of the stupid stuff he used to get up to, to take her mind off modelling struggles she was having. But all that did was put her mind solidly on Haryu, hence her prompt confession.
Karen tells Taiki that while it’s good to be considerate of someone’s feelings, if he truly likes Chii and wants to date her, he can’t just bounce the ball off the wall and assume the Chii in his head and the real Chii are one and the same. He needs to have a back-and-forth rally with Chii, which means learning more about what she’s thinking while telling her more about what he’s thinking.
We end with Karen meeting with Haryu after his post-loss run, her mere presence a reward and source of comfort (she is damned cute and knows it, after all). She even lets him hang off of her for a bit, even though he reeks of sweat, because he promises next time he’ll do better and go further. His drive helps motivate her, and vice versa.
I can’t say this detour to Haryu and Karen’s relationship was a momentum-killer when it comes to Chinatsu and Taiki. On the contrary, it pulls back the curtain to show that these two struggled just as Chii and Taiki are struggling with what exactly they are and how to move forward without going too far or ruining what they have.
Not only are they a good love story in their own right, but an aspirational roadmap for Taiki and Chinatsu. Less overthinking and assuming, and more communication and engagement. We’ll see if Taiki can apply what he’s learned.
