The Los Angeles Lakers’ recent great run was stopped by the best team in the Eastern Conference.
When the 2024-25 NBA season started, the Cleveland Cavaliers were expected to be a contender in the Eastern Conference.
However, no one predicted that the Cavs will play at an level where they would honestly seem unstoppable by the year ended.
The Los Angeles Lakers were recent victims of the Cavaliers’ phenomenal system in the regular season.
LA Lakers were no match for the Cavaliers
Heading into the matchup, the Lakers were in good form as they had a 5-1 record in their last six matchups of the season.
Moreover, with LeBron James and Anthony Davis healthy, the Laker Nation expected the team to give a befitting fight to the top seed in the East.
However, it was clear from the first whistle that the Cavs were a superior team.
After four quarters, the Cavaliers pulled away with an easy 122-110 win over the Lakers, improving their record to 29-4 this season.
JJ Redick speaks on how to defeat the Cavaliers
So far, JJ Redick has done a commendable job with the current Lakers roster in his rookie season as an NBA head coach.
Unfortunately, Redick had no answer for the Cavaliers as the Lakers fell to 18-14 this season.
After the game, the former NBA sharpshooter explained how a team of the Cavaliers’ caliber can be defeated.
“We certainly had our chances and really believe this against teams as good as Cleveland, you have to play close to perfect basketball,” Redick said.
He added: “They’re not going to let you beat them. They’re not going to beat themselves. They really believe in what they’re doing.”
Playing perfectly on a nightly basis is impossible for any NBA team. As for the Lakers’ New Year’s Eve defeat, the biggest difference was their somewhat poor 3-point shooting.
Despite generating good looks from deep, the Lakers shot just 25.7% from beyond the arc. On the other hand, the Cavaliers had a near 40% 3-point shooting night.
