Michael Jordan struggled against a particular type of player, says his former teammate.
Chicago Bulls legend Michael Jordan is viewed as the greatest basketball player of all time by the majority of the NBA community.
Jordan’s ability to dominate the game with his elite scoring played a crucial role in his GOAT status. Moreover, it has always been hard to pinpoint any major weakness in Mike’s game.
However, Jordan’s ex-teammate, BJ Armstrong once revealed that even ‘His Airness’ struggles vs. a particular type of player.
Chasing shooters was Michael Jordan’s Achilles Heel
If winning 10 NBA scoring titles proved MJ’s incredible shooting prowess, nine All-Defensive selections and one NBA DPOY award highlighted the Bulls legend’s defensive IQ.
Jordan has a plethora of memorable defensive plays under his belt. But even Jordan was exposed defensively when he faced moving shooters, claims Armstrong.
“Michael had problems with a certain player. Anyone who could catch-and-shoot and run around screen. He hated chasing screens. Because he was a ball watcher,” Armstrong stated.
“You know, he gambled all the time. You got to stay home on Rex [Chapman]. So Rex and Dell Curry and Jeff Malone. Anybody who can do that because Michael, he’s trying to get in the passing lane.”
As a result, Armstrong believes Rex had some good games vs. Jordan. Well, it’s very easy to prove it wrong.
Jordan had a 24-2 record vs. Chapman. In those 26 matchups, Rex had just two games where he outscored Mike, but he had several games where he scored more points than his career average.

MJ would initially struggle in the modern era due to this weakness
Today, the NBA is far different from when it was during Jordan’s playing days. Because of the three-point boom, a major chunk of guards have developed the ability to catch and shoot.
Keeping that in mind, Jordan would struggle against these types of players in the NBA. But, only for a short time.
One thing that separated Jordan from the rest was his insane competitiveness. Sure, he may have struggled against catch-and-shoot players if he played in this era, but he would have worked hard on his skills to eradicate that flaw.
After all, it took him a couple of years, but MJ overcame the Detroit Pistons’ ‘Jordan Rules.’ He became an unstoppable force following that.
