I knew there would be trouble if these two got together, and it finally happened. And you know what happens when you have two guys who can’t stop collecting cool stuff, and they get together and look at each other’s stuff? They start trading stuff and it soon gets out of control. Well it looks like it just did. Dave Newbern and Tommy Lee Byrd got to talking at Tommy’s swap meet and the next thing you know, Dave was getting a tour of Tommy’s place and it was all down hill from there.
But a good kind of down hill, as Tommy really wanted the Opel GT funny car that you have seen Finnegan, Newbern, and Cotten messing with on multiple episodes of the Faster show. And it turns out that Newbern had already had his fun with it and really wanted an old dragster. So a deal was made!
Two old dragsters for one old funny car. Win win for everyone.

I never thought we’d get rid of a front engine dragster, but the time has come! A while back, @12VoltDave visited our place…you probably saw his video. He liked one of our old drag cars and threw out the idea of a trade on his Opel GT funny car, which was featured on the Faster with Finnegan TV show. On the show, they put paddle tires on it and swapped the mechanical fuel injection for a blower on the small block Chevy. This thing was wild, but it worked! After the show ended, the car was sitting dormant, and Newbern offered it up as a trade on some of our old drag racing junk. So my dad and I decided that the T bucket altered roadster and one of our front engine dragsters would be a nice trade for this wild and crazy Opel GT.
After looking at the Opel closer, I just know this thing has some deep roots, either in the AA/Gas ranks or possible the Econo Altered ranks of the 1970’s. It has some neat parts with it. Overall, we’re thrilled with the trade, as this gives me yet another research project and gives us more room in the yard. Look forward to a deep dive into the history of this car…I’m hoping I can find previous owners, photos, and the normal routine.
