It would be safe to say that the Philadelphia 76ers’ 2024-25 NBA season is virtually over with season-ending blow to a key player.
For the majority of the 2024-25 NBA season, the biggest headlines about the Philadelpha 76ers has been the rehabilitation of Joel Embiid and Paul George.
Both stars suffered serious injuries before the season and have continued to struggle to put up excellent numbers.
However, there has been one silver lining to the 76ers’ absymal season and it’s the rise of star rookie Jared McCain.
Jared McCain out for the season
Many were skeptical of the 76ers picking the ex-Duke guard with the 16th overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft.
However, McCain suffered lateral meniscus tear on Dec. 17, 2024. Since then, the incredible rookie has been out of action. After all, McCain had to undergo surgery to repair the tear.
Initially, there was hope that McCain would return to the court at some point in the season. Unfortunately, it has been confirmed that the 20-year-old is ruled out for the remainder of the season.
Considering McCain was one of the frontrunners to win the Rookie of the Year award, it’s a huge blow to the 76ers.
McCain out but not forgotten
Prior to getting injured, McCain featured in 23 games for the 76ers. In those matchups, the 20-year-old averaged 15.3 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 2.6 assists per game.
McCain surpassed expectations and has already shown signs of being the next big thing for the 76ers.
In fact, it’s fair to say that the organization will likely build around him and Tyrese Maxey once Joel Embiid retires or if he decides to leave the team.
McCain was also shooting 46.0% from the field and 38.3% from the three-point line, making him a great offensive threat.
He was the 16th overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, and there are several teams who picked in front of the 76ers who will be wishing they had taken McCain.
His injury delays his path to superstardom, rather than preventing it. McCain showed enough during his early months to suggest he can be an asset to the team for years to come.
