Chris Paul will go down as one of the very best to ever do it when he calls time on his illustrious career and one star that benefitted from his greatness was Blake Griffin.
The pair came together with the LA Clippers to enjoy a six-year stint together, it didn’t result in any championships but the ‘Lob City’ team was certainly feared.
Griffin would eventually be traded to the Pistons after nine years with the Clippers who made him the No. 1 overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft. The draft class featured the likes of Stephen Curry, James Harden, and DeMar DeRozan.
While Griffin enjoyed proving to people that he was not passed his prime at the Pistons, he shared some of his best memories with Paul in LA.
Griffin learnt ‘every possession counts’ from Paul
CP3 may be remembered for being a 12x NBA All-Star or for being an assist machine, however, his former Clippers teammate will always remember him for his work ethic.
Paul is still averaging 29.1 minutes per game at the age of 39 with the San Antonio Spurs and is still demanding hard work from his teammates.
Speaking on ‘7PM in Brooklyn with Carmelo Anthony’, Griffin said: “I think the thing I probably got the most from him was, you watch Chris Paul turn the ball over I bet the chances of him getting a steal the next possession are probably the highest in the league. He would get so upset that he’d just turned it over he was figuring a way of how to get that ball back.
“That’s the thing I got, every possession matters. Think the game, and be a possession ahead. He’s working 5-6 different things at a time and it was him bringing us along. As young players me and DeAndre [DeAndre Jordan] trying to teach us how to do this every single night.”
Griffin went on to explain how “everybody sees the assists” but what they don’t see and don’t understand is his competitive drive to win.
“His competitive drive just to win a regular season match is pretty unmatched.”
Griffin and Paul’s record together
As previously mentioned the pair spent six years together at the Clippers and they complemented each other’s games perfectly.
Paul, one of the best playmakers in NBA history, and Griffin a powerhouse forward who was happy to dunk on people for fun, formed a strong partnership.
CP3 currently sits second overall in NBA history for assists with 12,186, an amazing 1157 of which were for Griffin.
The pair, although they never won any trophies together did hold a rather impressive record of 232-106.
After Griffin’s comments about Paul’s will to win every game, the 106 career defeats together must have been fun.
