Portland Trail Blazers fans have had very little to be excited about this season but Scoot Henderson is looking to change that.
The Trail Blazers sit with a 13-26 record in a tough Western Conference and have lost their last three games, including a heavy defeat to the Brooklyn Nets.
Despite the 114-132 defeat the performance of 20-year-old Henderson certainly caught the attention of fans across the league.
Henderson has already been praised by some of the best in the NBA including Kyrie Irving, his latest display will certainly make more take notice.
Henderson makes NBA history
Sophomore Henderson was picked up as the third overall pick in the 2023 NBA draft by the Trail Blazers, he was only behind potential future GOAT Victor Wembanyama and Brandon Miller of the Charlotte Hornets.
Henderson had an impressive rookie season where he averaged 14 points, 3.1 rebounds and 5.4 assists but his display against the Nets blew those figures out of the water.
Scoot scored 39 points alongside four rebounds and six assists, he backed this up with two steals for good measure.
This was the first 35-point game of his career and he became the youngest guard in NBA history to hit these stats in a single game.
NBA fans were certainly impressed with his display with one saying: “MY GOAT,” another said: “STAY ON THAT SIDEEEE.”
Many questioned why Henderson was not getting more minutes, he is averaging 26.1 this season, slightly down on last year’s 28.5.
One fan said: “See what happens when you play him more minutes Chauncey?” another supported this argument by stating: “He should be playing 38 minutes a night. It’s not like you’re trying to win, what is the purpose of holding him back?”
Many pointed out his efficiency from behind the arc as he impressed with 8/10 from 3-point range.
A fan said: “8/10 on threes? Nice shooting! That’s awesome,” another said: “8/10 3PM is insane.”
Scoot speaks out on career-high display
Following his staring show it was perhaps no surprise that the media were full of questions for Henderson who has given the Trail Blazers team real reason for optimism.
Asked by reporters what felt different about this performance he said: “Nah, I think I was just throwing, doing what I feel comfortable doing, not thinking.”
Despite the stand-out display, Henderson revealed how he could not celebrate his achievement as he was unhappy with the side’s loss.
He said: “I always think about what I could have done better, and what we could have done better as a team. We gave too many easy transition points to them and at the end.”
The Trail Blazers will hope Henderson can take this form into their next game with the LA Clippers.
