The Los Angeles Lakers made a decision to cut ties with one of their prospects, opening the door for him to prove them wrong.
For months the LA Lakers have been linked with trading for a new center. In a move nobody saw coming, the Western Conference challengers decided to sign free agent Trey Jemison.
The move for Jemison came at a cost, they had to cut Quincy Olivari, a player on a two-way deal who made a real impression during pre-season.
Olivari had been playing for the South Bay Lakers, where he put up 22 points just days earlier.
The young prospect had earned the respect of his Lakers teammates, with now former Laker D’Angelo Russell saying he was too good for the G League.
But Olivari played at guard, a position where the Lakers were not light, and he now becomes a free agent.
Quincy Olivari impressed at Xavier
Quincy Olivari was an undrafted rookie, which meant the decision to waive him was simpler for the Lakers, as they weren’t burning an investment.
Olivari spent the 2023-24 college season at Xavier University, and impressed his coach Sean Miller.
Speaking last March after playing in the Big East conference tournament at Madison Square Garden, Miller spoke of his respect for Miller’s numbers.
He said: “Quincy had arguably what I think is one of the great seasons in Xavier history, really. If you just stack up the numbers, they don’t lie.
“I think the one difference between Quincy and a lot of others that you compare him to is the schedule he played against, both this year’s Big East, 20 games, 10 at home, 10 on the road. We played a No. 1 seed, I think, six times.”
Miller also spoke of Olivari’s engaging personality, which also showed up during the Lakers in pre-season.
He said: “Quincy has a charisma about him, a leadership and a smile about him that’s very contagious. Sometimes when you have a personality like his, it works both ways.
“You catch him on a good day, he’s this. Catch him on a bad day, uh-oh, he’s that. That’s not him. He’s the same every day, and that’s to his credit.
“I don’t think any of us, any of us — look at Quincy coming to Xavier, performing at Xavier, who he was, both on the court, in the games, in practice, every single day leading up to this tournament, as anything other than A plus and exceptional.”
JJ Redick praised Olivari during pre-season
LA Lakers head coach JJ Redick praised Quincy Olivari during pre-season after he came off the bench to score 11 points in a win over the Milwaukee Bucks.
He said: “Quincy just completely changed the game. To me, and I told our guys this after, what he did is the blueprint for what we’re asking for a few of our players in terms of just picking up full court, being disruptive, taking time off the shot clock.
“I thought he just executed exactly what we want from someone in his position, and we’ve challenged a number of guys and they’ve done it well to varying degrees. But, I haven’t seen it executed that well until tonight with Quincy.”
Despite this, Redick was reluctant to select Olivari during the Lakers season, he only played in two NBA games, one in November and another in January.
Olivari will get another chance in the NBA, and he will be determined to seize it, and put what he has learned from LeBron James and co into practice.
