Recently, the Dallas Mavericks have entered the league’s trade chatter starring Daniel Gafford.
Per reports, the Dallas Mavericks are in the hunt for potentially acquiring an impact perimeter defender to surround their solid core of Luka Doncic, Kyrie Irving, and Klay Thompson. And in this desire, they’ve placed Daniel Gafford on the trade block in hopes of garnering plenty of interest.
Yet apparently, a veteran NBA insider has dismissed the notion as the Mavericks are still considerably coveting the veteran big man.
No Gafford trade
The report around Dallas’ perceived trade intention for Gafford has stirred mixed reaction amongst Mavericks fans. Ever since he arrived from last season’s trade deadline alongside P.J. Washington, Gafford emerged as one of the most important pieces of the team who eventually helped the franchise reach the 2024 NBA Finals.
As such, in his latest NBA update in Substack, Marc Stein has indicated that the Mavs aren’t interested in shipping Gafford away in hopes of acquiring that perimeter they need.
“Yet The Stein Line has been advised that it is a misnomer to suggest that Dallas is shopping center Daniel Gafford — one of two key arrivals at last February’s deadline alongside P.J. Washington — to get that wing defender,” he wrote.
Trading Gafford would be a mistake for the Mavs
Trading away your backup and reliable center doesn’t truly make sense for the Mavericks.
In his second season with Dallas, Gafford has maintained his productivity. For 40 games (17 starts), he is averaging 11.7 points, 6.0 boards, and 1.5 blocks while draining a highly efficient 70.5 percent from the field across 20.0 minutes.
On paper, the Mavericks appear well rounded already with several wing players such as Washington, Naji Marshall, and Quentin Grimes. A possible trade of Gafford can only deplete the team’s frontcourt depth, making the center responsibility of Dereck Lively II even heavier.
For now, Mavs fans may at least take that sigh of relief. While there might be intriguing additions to make ahead of the Feb. 6 trade deadline, entertaining a Gafford trade offers nothing but tons of downsides.
