With all due respect to Fuyu, Miyo’s soon-to-be mother-in-law: Miyo has dealt with far worse relatives. She’s already handled the “hard” difficulty setting, and Fuyu ain’t that. So when Fuyu insists Miyo has no business marrying into the Kudou family, and that if she wants to stay in her house she’ll have to don maid cosplay and earn her keep, Miyo is ready, willing, and able.
Fuyu took some superficial looks at her son’s fiancée and mistaken her meekness for weakness. She wants nothing more than to be useful to her husband-to-be and his family, so putting her to work is ideal for her. Instead of being waited on, she wins over the Kudou servants by showing them that she’s actually really good at cleaning.
When Fuyu sees Miyo happily scrubbing the floor instead of leaving in tears, she turns her frustration on Miyo, accusing her of mocking her, and raises her hand to strike her. But her husband Tadakiyo stops her, and warns her that he won’t overlook her going so far. She may think Miyo isn’t worthy of the Kudou name, but Miyo isn’t about to roll over and accept Fuyu’s premature assessment of her.
Like Miyo, Kiyoka has to deal with an amateur when he investigates the haunted mansion that appears to be a mad scientist’s secret lab. His attacker, part of an unknown anti-emperor religious order possibly called “Gifted Communion” is also a zealot willing to blow himself up rather than give Kiyoka any info. All Kiyoka knows is that this order is trouble, and he may have brought Miyo into danger.
Still, that danger feels far away when he returns home to find Miyo waiting for him—having thankfully changed out of the maid uniform. She welcomes him with a cup of tea, but he insists he join her on the sofa and cuddle up with him by the fire. Miyo reports to him that unlike the Saimori house, the Kudou house is full of warmth and happiness, which she believes has been fiercely protected by Fuyu.
She asks Kiyoka to keep watching her quietly by her side as she handles things with Fuyu herself. A visit to her bedchamber doesn’t go so well, as Fuyu soon has her fill of Miyo’s earnestness and tells her to go away. But as Tadakiyo and the head maid Nae tell Miyo, Fuyu believes she was born and raised to be a perfect lady, and sacrificed the role of “sweet wife” due to the solemn responsibility to protect the Kudou name and family.
Fuyu’s perfect-lady persona and family defenses are raised against someone so apparently proud of being imperfect as Miyo, but Nae and the servants can see why Kiyoka chose Miyo to marry: her kindness, empathy, and quiet strength, even in the face of naked hostility.
Miyo’s humility and selflessness are almost her undoing when a soldier attacked by some strange forces shows up to the Kudou house, and he goes into some kind of trance. Miyo believes she might be able to help the soldier with her Dream-Sight, and rejects Fuyu’s assertion that there’s nothing she can do.
One short trip into the soldier’s head looks like bad news, and fortunately Mr. Arata shows up in the nick of time to pull Miyo out. Miyo meant well, but better to head in with Arata’s support than all by her lonesome.
