At this point in A Tale of Perishing, Last Town should be mourning the destruction of most of its crops and the deaths of many townsfolk, including Unio, who sacrificed himself. Thanks to the newest Nine Soldiers member Hirose Natsuko, the script has been flipped: Unio lives, the city is celebrating with a harvest festival, and Natsuko has to get herself all dolled up like the rest of the heroes.
Despite everyone else reveling (other than Memmeln, who is always stoic), Luke thinks they should be on their toes for the next Void attack. Natsuko says the next attack won’t come until a rainy day, which QJ estimates won’t come for a month, so they should be fine, right? Well, maybe not: now that Natsuko has fundamentally changed the story, it stands to reason the rest of the future won’t turn out exactly how the movie did.
Take Luke meeting the heroine of the movie, the Mayor’s daughter Destiny Heartwarming. Like Luke is a composite of classic anime heroes, Destiny is a charming mélange of 80s magical girls and delicately voiced by Iwami Manaka. Instead of meeting at Unio’s funeral, they meet when she’s trying to avoid the perennially preening Chairman and Luke spills his beer on her.
The two hit it off rather quickly, and when the Chairman arrives with his other eight wives to claim Destiny, Natsuko is there, and asks why Destiny is marrying someone she doesn’t love. She says he’ll build an orphanage in the town, but she can just do that herself. When the Chairman insults Natsuko’s hair and clothes, Natsuko proudly declares she’ll wear what she’ll want and live how she wants. Destiny is clearly inspired.
When we see a Void enter the town, we also witness what looks like cloaked elves led by Memmeln (who had joined her fellow elves for “choir practice”) casting a spell on it. Next thing we know, there are two identical High Priests walking through the city. QJ identifies a Void nearby, but can’t tell which Priest is the real one. Natsuko quickly finds out by doing the Bee’s Knees; the real Priest can copy her movements but the Void can’t.
Even though Destiny is quick to befriend her, Natsuko is weary of her arrival since she always causes problems for Luke. In this case, he gave him vodka to drink so he’s too drunk to fight properly. She also knows Luke falls into despair when Destiny dies, and events start to unfold that threaten Destiny’s life. However, Natsuko’s got this, drawing from the 1969-1971 wrestling anime Tiger Mask as inspiration for her animation of the week: “Serval Cat Mask”. She then colorfully narrates the ensuing bout in which Cat Mask prevails.
Having drawn three days’ worth of animation in less than a minute, she falls asleep for another three days. This could be trouble if Voids attack while she’s asleep, but we’ll cross that road when we come to it. She’s made a friend in Destiny, who is not only still alive but now a huge Serval Cat Mask fan. As for Memmeln, her absence from the battle was noted, but is more aloof than ever. An elf that believes a 200-year ritual to be a “passing fad” may have her reasons for disguising that Void, but until we hear them, she’s looking sus as hell!
