With just a few weeks left in the calendar before San Francisco hosts this year’s All-Star Weekend, there’s still relatively little to no excitement around the festivities’ upcoming Slam Dunk Contest.
Stephon Castle and Matas Buzelis — rookies from the Class of 2024 — have already filed their intention to join the competition. Yet amid news about their entry, fans seemingly didn’t bat an eye — a clear depiction of the lost interest of many for an event that was once highly anticipated.
Shannon Sharpe names three stars he’ll watch for Slam Dunk Contest
From the past, the Slam Dunk Contest prided itself as the ultimate highlight of the All-Star Weekend. From the television and in the social media clips, we’ve seen how the likes of Michael Jordan, Vince Carter, Dominique Wilkins, Nate Robinson, Zach LaVine, and Aaron Gordon have graced the hardwood and gave every single fan that thrilling experience of witnessing thunderous jams.
But in today’s era, it’s unfortunate to think that the glamour of the contest has suddenly dimmed. Alongside the worsening perception about the All-Star Game, the Slam Dunk Contest also slowly became irrelevant in the eyes of the majority — mainly due to the lack of participation of several big names and renowned stars. Last year was a major snooze fest despite Jaylen Brown’s presence and considerably disappointing display.
For Shannon Sharpe, he’ll only entertain the idea of watching the Slam Dunk Contest if Ja Morant, Anthony Edwards, and Zion Williamson will give it a shot.
“You tell me Ja Morant, you tell me Antman, you tell me Zion, OK sign your boy up right there,” Sharpe exclaimed in ESPN’s First Take.
“As a matter of fact, I’m paying to get me a ticket, because I want to be front row because you got some of the great dunkers in the NBA currently in the dunk contest.
“But without that, it’s time to let it go.”
LeBron James has to be blamed for lost interest in Slam Dunk
There’s no-brainer that Morant, Edwards, and Williamson are three of the most electrifying sensations in the league today — capable enough to jump and put crowds on their feet with their highlight-reel athleticism and finishes. But injuries — specifically for both Morant and Williamson — undoubtedly hinder them from joining the contest.
Regardless of the other possible reasons why many other players have turned away from the idea of participating in the event, Stephen A. Smith meanwhile blamed LeBron James for the disinterest now for the Slam Dunk Contest
“LeBron never has [joined the Slam Dunk Contest]. He said he had nothing to prove. It ain’t about that, it was about carrying on the tradition,” Smith said.
“Nobody expects him to do now at age 40, but damn. It took 22 years in the league that you were around and never participated in it.”
In the end, Adam Silver and the rest of the NBA leadership can only act urgently to save the Slam Dunk Contest and restore its old glory.
