The story of the New York Knicks season has been a successful one, but there are questions over whether they can maintain it.
The New York Knicks have received criticism despite their 29-16 record, with Kevin Garnett recently calling out head coach Tom Thibodeau.
Garnett argued the Knicks lack faith in their bench players, and judging by the minutes Thibodeau gives to his excellent starting five, he’s not wrong.
Karl-Anthony Towns is dealing with an injury too, making his life more difficult on the court.
Precious Achiuwa impresses
Precious Achiuwa got 18 minutes on the court in the 99-95 win over the Brooklyn Nets, contributing 11 points, more than any other bench player.
And according to Knicks Centric, the combination of Achiuwa and Towns on court together has enjoyed real success.
Tommy Beer reports: “In the 144 minutes Karl-Anthony Towns and Precious Achiuwa have shared the floor together this season, New York has outscored their opponents by 44 points and is allowing just 104.4 points per 100 possessions.”
This is a combination Tom Thibodeau should be looking at exploring more, in order to give more minutes to Achiuwa, and start bringing some of his starters off the court.
In the win over the Nets, the Knicks’ starting five all played 34 minutes or more, with no bench player grabbing above 20.
Achiuwa needs more time
Precious Achiuwa made his return from injury late last year and has earned praise with the minutes he has been given.
Tom Thibodeau has praised his ‘speed and athleticism’, but he is averaging just 18.5 minutes per game on the court this season.
Ahead of the All-Star break, some of the Knicks starters could do with a little more rest, and the Achiuwa and Towns combination could benefit from longer on court together to see if they can develop on their brief time on court together.
It’s working, so the benefits are double for the Knicks. At the least, it warrants further investigation.
