LeBron James and the LA Lakers blew the Boston Celtics out in a big statement win against the defending champions.
Whether the 117-96 win over the Boston Celtics is enough to really see the LA Lakers considered as title contenders remains to be seen. But it sure felt good for Lakers fans.
Getting one over on the team’s historic rivals, and notching a key victory over one of the NBA’s top teams, is always reason to celebrate.
The Lakers fully deserved the win, with superstar player LeBron James showing his enduring qualities.
LeBron crucial down the stretch
LeBron James is still one of the most impactful players in the NBA, and he put up a 20-14-6 night.
This came despite scoring no points in the third quarter, something Lakers expert Mike Bresnahan admitted he was confused by.
Bresnahan told the Lakers’ post-game show on Spectrum: “LeBron scoreless in the third. It was kind of bizarre to watch it like, OK, maybe he’s tapering, maybe he’s pacing himself in the fourth?”
This was exactly the case. Earlier this week former star Robert Horry noted how LeBron had changed his game to conserve energy for the fourth quarter.
LeBron took over in the fourth, ensuring the Lakers retained their lead and put the Celtics away.
Bresnahan added: “Indeed, he was. He really was the guy who said, OK, the Celtics made up a few points in that third quarter to cut the lead to 15. In the fourth quarter, methodically, he made many different shots, many different ways.”
James Worthy praises LeBron James leadership
Speaking about LeBron James’ dominance in the fourth quarter, Lakers legend James Worthy stated: “That’s what leaders do.”
Speaking further about the four-times NBA champion, he added that he liked, “LeBron securing the win knowing that they needed the win.
“He put his stamp on it during the fourth. Dominant play, downhill, get to the rim, making sure the Lakers weren’t going to give up that lead in the fourth.”
The win puts the Lakers in fifth place in the Western Conference, narrowly ahead of rivals the Clippers.
Next up for the team is a game against the Warriors on Saturday night.
