The Miami Heat made it back-to-back wins with an overtime victory over the Orlando Magic to move to sixth in the East but the discussion was, understandably dominated by someone who didn’t play.
Jimmy Butler was suspended again by the Heat, leading to suggestions that he might have played his final game for the game this time.
The Heat-Butler saga has dominated the discourse all season, with the player burning all bridges with the organization.
Against the Orlando Magic, it reached a crescendo as the Miami Heat drew a line in the sand, opting to replace Butler in the lineup with Haywood Highsmith.
After witnessing a gutsy performance by the team in a crucial match for playoff prospects, Miami Heat fans all made the same point about Highsmith.
Miami Heat fans grateful for Haywood Highsmith
Having this level of upheaval hours before a game so important for the playoff fight wasn’t ideal, but the famous “Heat culture” came through.
Kel’el Ware has been this season’s success story and out of necessity, Highsmith might have to become another if the Heat are to be even remotely successful this season.
Highsmith only played 19 minutes against the Magic, but his defensive tenacity and application caught the eye of the Heat fans, who were simply grateful that there was no problem player with the team anymore to cause distractions.
“Who needs Jimmy Butler when you have HAYWOOD HIGHSMITH,” said one fan, probably only partly in jest, so tiring has been the Butler saga.
“HAYWOOD HIGHSMITH OVER EVERYONE,” said another in reference to Butler’s infamous “Tobias Harris over me?!” rant after his Heat eliminated the 76ers.
“Haywood Highsmith instant impact,” added a third, as a fourth repeated the infamous Butler question of “Over me?!” with “Yes indeed!”.
“Two-way Haywood Highsmith,” added another after the Heat star stole the ball in the opening exchange before deftly passing for a layup on the fastbreak.
Finally, one Heat fan summed up the sentiment in the fanbase. Butler once said “anyone but Miami”, the fans are firmly in the “anyone but Butler” mode right now.
They said: “Haywood Highsmith more dependable and drama-free than Jimmy. He’s better!”.
Erik Spoelstra keeping the Heat going
Erik Spoelstra has always been one of the NBA’s most dependable and highly-rated coaches with his ability to extract the maximum from his team.
That ability has been truly tested this season as he’s been forced to keep the team together and contending while dealing with a lot of outside noise.
He spoke about the team’s “grit” after the win against the Magic and said they’ll take a lot of confidence from it, blocking out the outside noise.
The Heat have been urged to trade Butler multiple times now and it has turned into a sort of an ego game between him and Pat Riley.
Spoelstra is, meanwhile, doing what he does best by discovering diamonds in the rough. Haywood Highsmith could be the next one.
