The San Antonio Spurs appear to be leading the race to sign Sacramento Kings star De’Aaaron Fox, but Kevin Garnett has urged them not to give up one key player.
Fox has reportedly named the Spurs as his preferred destination, you can’t blame him for wanting to play alongside potential future GOAT Victor Wembanyama.
Wemby continued to show his class as he dropped 30 points and 14 rebounds in the team’s dominant 144-118 win over NBA Cup champions the Milwaukee Bucks.
While Wemby has been the shining light in San Antonio, Garnett has warned that one star has played a major part in his early success.
Garnett praises Chris Paul’s impact on Wemby
Chris Paul is now playing in his 20th NBA season and continues to show his boundless quality alongside the future star in Wemby.
Paul recently stated that he was ‘grateful’ to play a part in Wemby’s career stating that the Frenchman was ‘different.’
Wemby is currently averaging 24.6 points, 10.9 rebounds and 3.7 assists. He is also on course to be named Defensive Player of the Year, much to the dismay of Lakers star Antony Davis.
Despite Wembanyama getting much of the attention, Garnett has highlighted how important Paul has been to his success.
Speaking on KG Certified, he said: “I will say this… Chris Paul is giving Wemby that [fire]. Chris Paul is down there giving good veteran energy.”
Paul Pierce also went on to praise the work of veterans like Paul saying: “Those veterans stabilize those young boys, so when you’ve got that young core you need to bring in those veterans to get it under control.”
Paul leads the pack this season in impressive stat
The quality of Paul is undoubted and he recently became the second-highest assist-maker in NBA history with 12,263.
While many know Paul for his brilliant playmaking abilities, former LA Clippers teammate Blake Griffin told people to ‘forget the assists’ and praised Paul for his ‘every possession counts’ mentality.’
Forgetting about the assists is proving tricky though as Paul continues to put up impressive numbers, he secured nine assists in the win over the Bucks taking him clear in a season stat race.
Paul has 10 games with 5+ assists and 0 turnovers this season, no other player has more than six.
While the addition of Fox will improve the Spurs considerably Paul must remain in San Antonio.
