Sunroof has become a convenience and luxury feature that was once only available with luxury cars. Only expensive cars used to offer this feature. However, things have changed in the Indian car market now, and more and more automakers are offering this feature on even budget cars. The sunroof itself has evolved, and now carmakers are even offering new panoramic sunroofs in their vehicles as well. Recently, Toyota, which also offers a panoramic sunroof with its Innova Hycross, has shared a video instructing how to use this feature.
Toyota’s instructions for panoramic moonroof
The video instructing how to properly and safely use the panoramic sunroof has been shared by Toyota India on their official channel. The video starts off by mentioning that before learning how to operate the panoramic moonroof on the Innova Hycross, a few safety rules need to be understood. It is stated that it should be strictly taken care that no passenger’s head or hand is out of the moonroof when the vehicle is in motion. The other safety precaution mentioned by the video is that nobody should sit on top of the glass moonroof.

Following these, the video then instructs on how to properly use this convenience and luxury feature. It mentions that the panoramic moonroof on the Toyota Innova Hycross hybrid MPV has two parts. The first is a sunshade, and the other is the panoramic moon roof itself. The video states that with a light press of the roll-down button located on the top in front, the sunshades open. The other button helps in closing it. Next, it shows how to tilt and open and close the actual moonroof.
Reckless behavior because of sunroofs
Time after time, we have seen that people across the country misuse this luxury convenience feature by putting themselves out of it. This behavior has made the police authorities alert. Every now and then, a new case appears on social media and in real life where someone is seen putting their head out of the sunroof, which is only meant to let the fresh air and sunshine get into the vehicle.
Most recently in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, a fitness influencer was seen standing outside of a sunroof on a Hyundai Verna sedan. The man first came out of the sunroof, and soon after that, he removed his t-shirt to flex his muscles. The video of his muscle flexing then made its way onto the internet, after which the Uttar Pradesh police was tagged on his post. The police then reported that they have started an investigation against this man.
Karnataka police makes peeking out of sunroof illegal
As mentioned above, there are numerous risks involved when people bring their head out of the sunroof of a moving vehicle. Recently, taking cognizance of this rising issue, the Karnataka police stated that it is illegal and a violation of the law to come out of the sunroof on a vehicle that is in motion. The same has also been done in the states of West Bengal and Maharashtra, along with other states as well.
Recently commenting on the topic of sunroofs, Alok Kumar, the Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) of traffic and road safety, in an interview with Times of India, stated that peeking out of sunroofs while a vehicle is driving is a violation of the law.
The ADGP stated, “Though there is no specific rule prohibiting individuals from standing inside their car and looking out of the sunroof, section 177 in the Motor Vehicles Act empowers us to impose fines on such offenders. It is a dangerous stunt that is being performed. Youths and children are often seen engaging in this risky behavior, which not only endangers their safety but also the safety of others on the road,” Kumar warned.
