NHTSA announced a recall for certain 2021-2023 Tesla Model X vehicles due to a problem with the braking system. The SUV’s electronics may be unable to detect low brake fluid levels, leading to not displaying a warning light to the driver.
According to the agency, the potential number of affected Model X units is 54,676, coming from the 2021, 2022, and 2023 model years. While there are no reported accidents or injuries related to this condition, driving a vehicle with low brake fluid can potentially reduce braking performance and increase the risk of an accident.

Tesla says the solution to this problem is a simple over-the-air (OTA) software update which has already been issued free of charge. This update (software release 2023.32.7 or later) corrects the vehicle controller’s threshold range so it can correctly detect low brake fluid levels.
This is not the first time Tesla issued a recall fix over the air, avoiding the hustle of bringing owners to service centers and offering a more direct solution. The same thing happened in April 2023, when Tesla had to fix an issue with faulty rearview cameras.
While the problem is already dealt with, owners of the affected Tesla Model X units will still be notified via a letter, expected to be mailed on December 12, 2023. Those who wish to learn more can always contact Tesla‘s customer service.
