Markups aren’t anything new in today’s day and age despite the cooling off that we’ve seen in the used-car market. Despite that, it’s quite shocking to see one that’s several tens of thousands of dollars and even more surprising when it’s more than the car at MSRP. However, El Monte Nissan in California is trying to gouge an extra $89,995 on top of a car that Nissan tells its customers should cost $68,500.
The new 2024 Nissan NISMO Z is a car that splits opinions. It boasts 20 extra horsepower (14 kW) over other Z trims and comes with unique styling, more downforce, and a suite of suspension improvements. On the other hand, it’s only available with an automatic gearbox and it starts at about 50% more than the base Z. What’s not up for debate is that at $66,085, it’s an expensive proposition.
To that end, it’ll be interesting to see how well they sell but we get the feeling that the one at El Monte Nissan won’t be moving anytime soon. As reported by The Drive, the dealer there wants a total of $158,495 for its example of the NISMO Z. It even explains its thinking in a silly little notice one poster on Facebook leaked to the world.

“This new Nissan Z NIZMO (yes, the dealer spelled NISMO wrong and put it after Z instead of before) is a low production high demand vehicle and as such it is being sold at a premium price,” the notice reads. Color us surprised as we thought the additional $12,000 on top of the cost of the old top spec Z Performance was that “premium.”
Things have not gone great for the dealer in question since the price leaked though. At least ten different people have reviewed the dealer on Google with one-star ratings and specifically called out the price-gouging markup in question. At least one Nissan enthusiast on Facebook has contacted Nissan directly about the situation.
The New Nissan Z group where it was first posted about is certainly having fun with the dealer too. As of this writing, there are nearly 200 comments all poking fun at El Monte. This is, after all, the kind of cash one would spend on a Nissan GT-R which starts from $120.990.
