Luka Dončić and the Dallas Mavericks came up well short of their goal last season. Their trade for Kyrie Irving was supposed to help them compete in the Western Conference, but they wound up sliding out of the playoff picture entirely by season’s end. They have high hopes for the upcoming year as they will try to make up for the mistakes they made last season, and some are considering them an underdog candidate to make a deep playoff run and perhaps an NBA Finals appearance.

It will take an outstanding performance throughout the season from both Dončić and Irving, who are capable of being the best player on the floor on any given night. If Dončić is able to put up the numbers that he did last year, then the Mavericks won’t only be in contention, but he’ll have a chance to be the leading scorer in the NBA, as well.
The oddsmakers at BetOnline have released lines regarding player performance for the 2023-24 season, including which guys will be the leaders in certain statistical categories. One of the more intriguing wagers is which player will lead the league in scoring for the year, and Dončić is near the top.
Last year’s points leader, Joel Embiid, is in the top spot with the shortest odds. He averaged 33.1 points per game in 2022-23 to lead the league on his way to the MVP award. His designation is +250, which is a somewhat wide margin over Dončić in second. The Mavericks guard is coming in at +325, with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander just being him at +375. Aside from Damian Lillard, those are the three players who led the league in scoring a season ago.

Speaking of Lillard, he makes one of two players on the Milwaukee Bucks that are in the top-6 for most likely to lead the league in scoring. His new teammate Giannis Antetokounmpo is not far being Gilgeous-Alexander at +450.
Steph Curry didn’t play in enough games to be included on some of the scoring lists from last season, but he was able to average 29.4 points in the 56 games that he did participate in. If he is able to re-produce those numbers while adding one more three pointer per game, then he has a chance to be a long shot winner in this particular category at +1800.
