The build quality of a car is a factor that many people consider these days when buying a new car. Brands like Tata and Mahindra have popularized their models among customers for their build quality. The Global NCAP crash test results have also pushed many car manufacturers to improve the overall build quality of their vehicles. Here, we have a list of 13 made-in-India cars that received a 5-star rating from GNCAP.
Tata Nexon
The Tata Nexon became the first-ever made-in-India car to achieve a 5-star rating at the Global NCAP. It scored 16.06 points out of 17 for adult occupant protection. Tata recently launched the facelift version of the Nexon in the market, and this version is expected to receive a similar score. The Nexon is available with both petrol and diesel engine options.
Tata Altroz
The Altroz is Tata’s first premium hatchback and has also received a 5-star rating in the Global NCAP crash test. It scored 16.13 points out of 17 in the adult protection category. The Altroz is currently the only hatchback in the segment that offers a diesel engine option.
Mahindra XUV300
Shortly after the Nexon, Mahindra tested their sub-4-meter SUV, the XUV300. In the crash test, the SUV received a 5-star rating. The Mahindra XUV300 scored 16.41 points out of 17, surpassing both the Tata Altroz and Nexon.
Mahindra XUV700
A few years ago, Mahindra launched the all-new XUV700 SUV in the market. It is currently the flagship model from Mahindra and has also received a 5-star rating from Global NCAP. The XUV700 scored 16.03 points out of 17 in adult safety rating.
Mahindra Scorpio-N
The Mahindra Scorpio-N was actually the first SUV to be tested by Global NCAP after they revised the protocols. The all-new Scorpio-N also scored 29.25 points out of 34 in adult occupant safety.
Tata Punch
Tata Motors has become synonymous with build quality. Their entry-level SUV, the Punch, also received a 5-star rating in the crash test. The Tata Punch achieved the highest-ever score by a Tata car in adult occupant protection, with 16.45 points out of 17.
Volkswagen Virtus and Skoda Slavia
The Volkswagen Virtus and Skoda Slavia are based on the same platform as part of Volkswagen Group’s India 2.0 Strategy. These sedans were also tested by Global NCAP after the protocols were revised. Both sedans achieved 29.71 points out of 34, resulting in 5-star ratings.
Volkswagen Taigun and Skoda Kushaq
Similar to the Virtus and Slavia, the Taigun and Kushaq also use the same platform. Both vehicles have many things in common, including the exterior design. The SUVs scored 29.64 points out of 34 and achieved a 5-star rating under the revised protocols by Global NCAP.
Hyundai Verna
The first and only Hyundai on the list is the all-new Verna. The sedan was launched in the market earlier this year and scored 28.18 points out of 34 in adult occupant protection.
Tata Harrier & Safari
The latest entrants on this list are the recently launched Harrier facelift and Safari facelift. Tata did not send the older versions of the Harrier and Safari for Global NCAP crash tests. The recently launched facelifted versions of Harrier and Safari achieved a 5-star rating, scoring 33.05 out of 34 points for adult occupant protection.
