In a throwback to the colorful days of racing jalopies on old dirt airstrips, the first Vintage Sturgis Dirt Drags was held Oct. 6-7 at Sturgis Dragway in South Dakota.
Co-sponsored by the Counts of Cobblestone Car Club, which was formed in 1957, the event started taking shape when organizers in southern Colorado had to cancel the popular Hot Rod Dirt Drags the past two years. Officials in the Counts wanted to reignite the action and put out a call last spring for vintage rods and motorcycles to convene in Sturgis, a small town in the Black Hills that is well known in the automotive enthusiast community for staging huge car and bike rallies.
A pair of 300-foot lanes were plowed out of a cow pasture that runs adjacent to the eighth-mile dragstrip originally built in 1988. The field was limited to ’64 and earlier vehicles with period-correct drivetrains, although “Pro” class entries were allowed with late-model engines.
There were no eliminations or winners and losers among the 50-plus cars that registered. Grudge matches and runs for fun were flag-started by pinup girls. The event focused on entertainment and was held in the spirit of the RPM Nationals and The Race of Gentlemen.
