Through the first six weeks of the 2023 NFL season, the chase for the Coach of the Year award was a two-man race. Dan Campbell and Mike McDaniel had the Lions and Dolphins at 5-1 and at the top of their divisions entering Week 7, and every other coach in the league was considered a long shot for the award before Sunday’s games were played.

But both Detroit and Miami suffered their second losses of the season last weekend, and there is a new horse that has entered the race.
Campbell was the slight leader over McDaniel for each passing week (via BetOnline), and no one else was close. The designations varied, but Campbell was sitting at roughly +325 while McDaniel floated around +375. They are listed with identical +350 designations now, making them co-favorites for the time being. But due to their impressive start amidst low expectations, the Houston Texans have their head coach making a run at the award.
DeMeco Ryans was brought in to be the leader of the Texans during the off-season, and the rookie head coach was paired with a rookie quarterback for their first campaigns, leading to low expectations for Year 1. But CJ Stroud has been impressive in his first 6 starts, and Houston is off to a more than respectable 3-3 start. They have a couple of tough losses, but have beaten the Jaguars and Steelers by 20+ points each, and would be just a half-game out of a playoff spot if the NFL season ended today.

The success has given Ryans a boost up the Coach of the Year odds board, and is now sitting at +550. There is still a gap between him and the top-two candidates, but before last week, there was no third coach that had shorter than +1000 odds.
The Texans are coming off of a bye week and will take on the winless Carolina Panthers in Week 8. It will be a matchup between the top 2 picks from the 2023 NFL Draft, with Stroud taking on Bryce Young, and the two have had vastly different starts to their careers thus far. Carolina will be the home team, but the visiting Texans are currently favored by 3 points.
