After providing us with a glimpse of an intriguing electric sports car concept last week, Toyota has officially presented its FT-Se at the ongoing Japan Mobility Show in Tokyo. The car has been coined as a concept to preview “one of the options for sports cars” that Toyota is exploring in the carbon-neutral era.
Few would argue that the FT-Se is quite the looker. Rather than taking obvious design inspiration from the current Supra and GR 86 sports cars, Toyota looks to have evolved the design of the 2021 GR Sports Concept to craft a concept that looks modern, aggressive, and dare we say it, sexy. The front end immediately catches the eye thanks to a blacked-out grille and large air intakes complemented by LED daytime running lights that run vertically to the base of the fascia.
The pointed nose is complemented by sharp angles on the front quarter panels and a cabin shape that reminds us of the Lotus Evora. A set of intricate wheels sitting over a set of red brake calipers adds to the sporty feel of the concept, as do the dramatic rocker panels, flush door handles, and tiny wing mirrors.

Toyota says the “cutting-edge silhouette” of the GR-branded concept has been conceived to reduce aerodynamic drag and it certainly looks like it, in particular thanks to the molded rear quarter panels that transition neatly into small fins occupied by the thin LED taillights, helping the car slice through the air. Other highlights at the rear include a ducktail spoiler not dissimilar to the one of the Supra and a dramatic diffuser. Toyota has also shown a version of the FT-Se on a race circuit with a fixed rear wing attached to the rear window.

The interior of the FT-Se is just as dramatic as the exterior. Positioned in front of the driver is a yoke steering wheel with dual, portrait displays positioned to either side of it and displaying important vehicle and infotainment functions. The car also has a digital instrument cluster and Recaro bucket seats with carbon fiber backs and bathed in beautiful blue Alcantara. An intricate blue weave that looks to be made out of plastic is also used on the door panels, the lower part of the dashboard, and the center console.
The Japanese carmaker has not provided specifics about the concept’s powertrain, other than confirming that it is a battery-electric vehicle. It says that it incorporates the expertise that Toyota Gazoo Racing has gained in motorsport in recent years and that it supports software updates to “grow with the driver.”
Toyota thinks that mobility solutions of the future will be closely aligned with the lifestyles of owners and become more than simple transportation tools. It says that vehicles like the FT-Se will “evolve into one-of-a-kind cherished vehicles by offering the joy of personal ride customization, as well as convenient functions for stress-free browsing of local area information while onboard.”
