Cooper Flagg, the No. 1 basketball recruit in the Class of 2024, is expected to announce his college decision this week, basketball insider Adam Zagoria reported for Forbes on Wednesday.
Flagg, a 6-foot-8 forward originally from Maine who plays at powerhouse Montverde Academy in Florida, has narrowed his decision down to UConn and Duke. He had planned an additional visit to Kansas, but cancelled after his trip to Storrs and before his official visit to Duke last weekend.
“My understanding is SLAM is doing the announcement so I think they’re dropping a cover, with the school he selects on the cover,” Montverde head coach Kevin Boyle told Zagoria, who wrote that the coach believes the announcement could come Thursday.
Flagg’s mother, Kelly, told The Messenger in early October that she “would expect he will decide after the Duke visit in a reasonably short period.” That Duke visit began Friday with a rally that welcomed Flagg through a sea of fans as he entered Cameron Indoor Stadium for the program’s “Countdown to Craziness” event.
Now that his visits are over, Flagg is on the clock with the NCAA’s early signing period beginning Nov. 8.
He had already visited Duke unofficially in August and called the blue-blood a “dream school.” His 247Sports Crystal Ball projection is 100% on the Blue Devils.
But Dan Hurley, who typically halts his recruiting travel in September, has continued to invest in Flagg’s recruitment. UConn was the only school Flagg attended for an official visit other than Duke, and the visit went well in September. In addition to attending the UConn football game at Rentschler Field that weekend – which, ironically, was a 41-7 loss to Duke – the Huskies set up a photoshoot with Flagg and his close family friend, Huskies’ sophomore center Donovan Clingan, wearing their mothers’ uniforms from when they played together at UMaine.
“It was great. I had a really good time out there,” Flagg told 247Sports’ Travis Branham of his time in Connecticut. “I got to see the coaching-style through practice and stuff. I had a really good time, I got to hang out with the players a lot. All around it was a great time.
“Their pitch to me is that it’s just a winning school and a winning culture. No matter how good they may think I am or how good people think I am, coach Hurley is going to push me no matter what and help me get to the next level.”
