Mopar Fans Rejoice: The Next Gen Dodge Charger is Getting a Gas Engine

Perhaps Dodge’s “Last Call” cars, though an unforgettable sendoff for the previous Challenger and Charger generations, wasn’t the last of the brands I.C.E. muscle cars after all. What is referred to as a “reliable source” has confirmed that the new generation of Dodge Charger will have the option to be fueled by gasoline.

Rumors of Dodge still offering gas-powered muscle cars in the new generation have spiraled across the internet since the release of the electric Charger Daytona SRT concept car in 2022, with Mopar fans in disbelief over the news of the automaker switching to strictly EV power.

A recent report from The Drive says that the next-generation Dodge Charger will offer both powertrain versions, a full-electric model (with a notable exhaust rumble) or a gas-powered 3.0-liter “Hurricane” inline-six engine. The publication assures us that the news came to them “by way of a source connected to a supplier with firsthand information of Dodge’s production plans,” stating “the source agreed to speak about the next-gen Charger program in exchange for anonymity.” Still suspicious? The Drive says the source “shared a number of details confirming their identity and position.”

The absence of a V8 engine option may disappoint customers seeking big power, but the Hurricane engine can certainly hold its own. In fact, the twin-turbo 3.0-liter Hurricane six-cylinder engine reportedly offers more power than many naturally aspirated V8 variants.

Currently, Stellantis offers two Hurricane I6 engine variants, a standard-output with 420-horsepower and 468 lb-ft of torque and the high-output setup with 510 horsepower and 500 lb-ft of torque. The new engine is only used in Jeep Wrangler and Cherokee models, so why not expand its lineup? Word has it, the Hurricane will take the new muscle car generation by storm:

“They’re keeping gasoline engines. The official designation for the vehicle platform is LB and it will have the new GME-T6 Hurricane inline-six in RWD and AWD,” the source told The Drive. “It will be using the Stellantis Gen 4 transmission that’s also rolling out to Mack Assembly, Jefferson North Assembly, and Toledo North.”

The source was unable to confirm how close the concept design will be to the final rendition, or whether the EV Challenger will take on a different appearance than the inline-six powered model. For now, only the standard version of the Hurricane I6 paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission is confirmed for the new Charger. Whether or not the high-output Hurricane will be available is unknown, and so far, there’s no sign of a manual transmission offering.
