Figure eight racing has been drawing spectators to local circle tracks for decades. Part stock car race and part thrill show act, the races are high drama from start to finish. The perfect driver in these contests is someone who has lots of nerve and a long history of playing in traffic.
If you are unfamiliar with this type of racing, the cars race in the shape of the number eight. The excitement comes at the center of the track where the field literally folds over itself, with race cars bobbing and weaving through the traffic at high speed. This video shows what happens with it all goes wrong.
Normally accidents at these races are not as severe as this one. Lots of spins and front/rears getting clipped, but to see one car center punch another at what seems to be full throttle is a rarity. Pay close attention and you’ll see the motor get ripped out of one of the cars upon impact.
