Cooper Flagg, the No. 1 high school basketball recruit in the country, has committed to Duke. The five-star prospect chose the Blue Devils over UConn, making his college decision after a recruiting process that drew national interest.
The Newport, Maine native visited UConn in late September and the Huskies appeared to emerge as a real threat to land him. Duke had been the overwhelming favorite from the beginning, with Flagg having called it his “dream school” in the past.
The 6-8 wing is hyped as one of the best prospects in years and could potentially be the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft.

“My college decision wasn’t an easy one at all. Ultimately, it ended up coming down to UConn and Duke, two historic programs known for their prestigious reputations and winning cultures,” Flagg said in his commitment video. “With that being said, I’ve decided to attend Duke University next year. After I got on campus, I really started to envision myself in Durham. All of the love I felt made me really excited, seeing all of the Crazies and the atmosphere in Cameron (Indoor Stadium), I’m honored that I have the opportunity to join the brotherhood.”
Duke has already landed commitments from five-star wing Isaiah Evans and guard Kon Knueppel, and top recruits V.J. Edgecombe (ranked No. 5 in the class by ESPN) and Pat Ngongba (No. 19) visited the school alongside Flagg during the program’s “Countdown to Craziness” event two weeks ago.
Blue Devils head coach Jon Scheyer has landed the No. 1 and No. 2 ranked recruiting classes in his first two cycles since taking over for the legendary Mike Krzyzewski.
At UConn, head coach Dan Hurley brought in a top-5 class in the Class of 2023 which is headlined by five-star point guard Stephon Castle, a consensus top-15 recruit, and the group of five freshmen is expected to play a large role in the upcoming season for the defending national champions.
“UConn is second to no other program in college basketball, we don’t decide who we get, but no one should be off the board relative to whether they should be considering us. We do it, right now, as good as anybody,” UConn head coach Dan Hurley said Monday after speaking at the Middlesex County Chamber of Commerce breakfast.
“There’s all types of ways of looking at the process, short-term, long-term, it’s all based on the individual. We’re most successful with people that just make a pure basketball decision – ‘I want to play for this coach, I love the way that they build the roster, this program has won the most championships, Storrs, Connecticut’s a great place to go and concentrate on my craft.’ Again we’re blue-collar basketball, not social media basketball.”
UConn has landed two four-star commitments for the Class of 2024 in Isaiah Abraham, a 6-foot-7 forward, and Ahmad Nowell, a 6-foot-1 guard.
“I look at our recruiting, obviously we have to stick to our identity and what’s worked for us because it’s worked, the range we’ve recruited in has paid dividends,” Hurley said. “But then you’re also evaluating each recruiting class and its relative strength and what you should go for in a class. There may be incredible value in the 52nd-ranked player in the country in a class, to you maybe is a guy who’s a two-year player and you love his ability. Then, maybe in another class, a player that’s in that range you may not like and say, ‘I’m gonna shoot higher and if I don’t win there I’m going to the portal because I don’t think this high school player can help us.’ I think it’s just, you’ve got to adapt and you’ve got to look at each class differently.”
