Draymond Green and Rudy Gobert have an extended record of rivalry. The two players have had multiple on-court fights, including one in 2017 that resulted in Green receiving a one-game suspension.
He did it again Tuesday night, turning a brawl he had nothing to do with into a full-on WWE chokehold and dragging Timberwolves center Rudy Gobert away from the scene like the hero he imagines himself to be.
Following a scuffle that erupted in the first two minutes, the Golden State Warriors big man, teammate Klay Thompson, and Minnesota Timberwolves player Jaden McDaniels were ejected from an NBA in-season tournament game.
Thompson and McDaniels started tugging and shoving each other in transition, which sparked the brawl. Rudy Gobert of the Wolves went in to pull Thompson back, but was grabbed by Green, who put the 7-footer in a headlock and forcibly hauled him away for seven seconds.
The Golden State Warriors knew they faced a difficult assignment before the ball was hurled into the air for Tuesday night’s opening tip. The Warriors were rematching a Minnesota Timberwolves squad that had not only beaten them easily the day before, but was also on a six-game winning streak. To make matters worse, the Warriors — who have been increasingly playing like a one-man show — were missing that one man, as Steph Curry was sidelined by a knee injury.
The scenario quickly went viral, leading to the dismissal of Draymond Green, Klay Thompson, and Jaden McDaniels. As a result, the league is expected to slap Green with a significant suspension for his unwarranted role in the scuffle.
The Warriors were down Curry, Thompson, and Green with no points on the board, while the Wolves were left to replace (respectfully) their fifth-best starting. You’d understand if they didn’t strive to win and instead concentrated only on making Gobert (who wasn’t booted) reconsider his life choices. And, to be fair, they did the latter part.
