While electric two-wheelers are anticipated to represent the future of mobility on two wheels, numerous incidents have highlighted the lack of safety checks and subpar quality in these vehicles. Electric two-wheelers from nearly all domestic brands have faced scrutiny due to instances of spontaneous combustion. A recent case involving an Ampere Magnus EX electric scooter catching fire has captured the attention of netizens.

An X (formerly Twitter) post shared by a user named “Nagina National Green Automobile” depicts an Ampere Magus EX electric scooter igniting in broad daylight on a traffic-filled road in Pune. In the video shared by the user, the blue scooter catches fire near the area housing the battery, located beneath the seat.
As the fire erupts, an individual attempts to extinguish it by pouring a bucket of water. However, the fire intensifies, leading to the scooter being reduced to ashes. The video concludes with an image showing only the burnt frame of the scooter remaining.
This footage of the Ampere Magnus EV burning has once again highlighted the persistent issues regarding poor quality plaguing domestically produced electric two-wheelers. The post has drawn responses pointing out the quality concerns faced by electric two-wheeler users. The post’s caption questions why companies jeopardize the lives of innocent customers, tagging the official handles of government agencies and EV brands.

With the surge in the popularity of electric two-wheelers, incidents of these vehicles catching fire have also increased. Over the past two years, there have been numerous such instances involving electric two-wheelers from brands like Ola Electric, Ampere Electric, Okinawa, Pure EV, Jitendra EV, and many others. Apart from a few notable brands, the majority of EV manufacturers source low-quality components from China and assemble them in India without adequate quality checks.
In the past year, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has acknowledged these incidents and implemented stringent quality control measures for production. However, given the ongoing occurrences of electric scooters catching fire, it appears that a more robust quality control procedure is imperative to ensure customers of electric two-wheelers receive higher-quality products.
