BMW is readying a next-generation X3 and based on prototypes that have recently been spotted out and about, there’s a chance that it may look a little like this.
The German automaker has faced criticism in recent years for the designs of its vehicles, and while it has steadfastly defended its design language, some aspects of the new X3 seem to have been streamlined. These alterations were initially observed on a thinly-disguised prototype spotted in September and are especially apparent in these renderings by Sugar Design.
For starters, the body of the new X3 presented has far fewer creases and less dramatic lines. This is apparent when comparing the sides to the outgoing model and we’re also fond of the door handles that sit flush with the bodywork. Some elements of the next-gen X3 presented in these renderings will no doubt cause a little controversy, however.

First is the front grille. The kidneys have grown in size and have ditched the traditional vertical slats in favor of gloss black plastic, making for a somewhat awkward design. The fenders are also slightly more square than they are in the current model. One element that we are rather fond of are the newly-designed headlights, similar in shape of those to the X1 and the new 5-Series.
What about the rear end? Well, a recent prototype revealed that the new X3 will adopt LED taillights that are radically different to those of the current model and Sugar Design has imagined what these could look like. The new lights incorporate signatures in the shape of a capital ‘Y’ sitting on its side and certainly make a statement.
While specific powertrain details about the new X3 are still undisclosed, it is believed that the internal combustion model, featuring gasoline and diesel (for markets outside of North America) as well as hybrid units, will continue with an updated version of the current CLAR architecture. In contrast, the upcoming iX3 all-electric model is expected to transition to BMW’s ‘Neue Klasse’ (new class) platform.
The next-generation X3 is anticipated to be revealed in mid-2024, which aligns with BMW’s production and launch schedules.
