The Austro-Daimler ADS-R was designed over a hundred years ago by Ferdinand Porsche in Wiener Neustadt, Austria, while he was the managing director of Austro-Daimler in the 1920s. The race car was Ferdinand Porsche’s way of proving that small, affordable cars can pack a lot of smiles per mile. Unfortunately, the vintage car never made it to production lines, but one of the four originals, also known as the Sascha, was recently restored by the Porsche Museum just in time to return to the streets of Wiener Neustadt.
The ADS-R proves that Porsche’s need for speed began in the early days. He created the vintage racer to be small and lightweight, and although its relatively modest, it could still compete with the larger, higher-powered vehicles of the era. It’s powered by a 1,100 cc inline-four that revs up to 4,500 rpm, and its 49-horses is plenty of power to push the 1,3180-lb to impressive speeds.
“It’s a lot of fun,” exclaimed Jan Heidak, who works at the Porsche Museum. “You can feel every vibration. Hear how the engine’s performing. There’s no power steering, so you need a lot of strength and sensitivity.” The vintage car was originally built to handle all road surfaces. On modern roads, Heidak found that it actually has too much grip.
The Sascha was a rocket in its time, having won 22 of the 52 total races it competed in. All four ADS-R cars competed in the 1922 Targa Florio. Two of those three took first and second place in the 1.1-liter class. The third car in that class had engine issues and did not finish the race. The fourth car came to the race equipped with a 1.5-liter engine and ran in the opened class against race cars that had up to five-times the power, but it still finished 19th overall.

Seeing the restored Sascha back in its hometown and rolling the streets was like being in a time machine, according to Heidak. And the Porsche Museum team learned plenty during the restoration process. Heidak’s boss, Kuno Werner, admits to not knowing much about the car’s history until the restoration began.
“When we first got started, I didn’t know much about Sascha,” said Werner. “For me, the company’s history begins later. But it’s interesting when you delve further into the company story and discover many things you’re already familiar with in other vehicles.”

You just might have an opportunity to see the Austro-Daimler ADS-R in person: since select Porsche Museum staff members have learned how to keep the vintage racecar running, the Museum plans to take the car to more events in celebration of the company’s history. Until then, you can learn more about the Sascha in the video below:
