The Mahindra Thar off-road SUV, as we all now know, is one of the most popular SUVs sold by the brand in India. This SUV has made off-road enthusiasts across the country fall madly in love with it. However, it’s just not Indians who appreciate this SUV. Recently, a video of an Australian YouTuber who drove the Thar 4X4 for the first time has been shared online. By the end of this video, the presenter makes a bold statement, saying that Indians should be proud of the Mahindra Thar.
Australian journalist drives Mahindra Thar
The video review of the Australian journalist driving the Mahindra Thar has been shared on YouTube by The Right Car? on their channel. It starts off with the presenter mentioning that he is visiting India as a guest of the Mahindra brand. He mentions that they will be testing Mahindra’s Indian lineup of SUVs at their new Mahindra SUV Proving Track in SIPCOT Industrial Estate, Cheyyar, Tamil Nadu.
Following the introduction, the presenter then talks about the Mahindra Thar. He states that this SUV is offered in a short wheelbase format with three doors and a number of powertrain options. Next up, he talks about the Mahindra SUV Proving Track’s off-road course. He highlights that this course is one of the toughest, gruesome, and most realistic courses that he has ever encountered. This track offers 31 different obstacles which help in understanding the capabilities of the Mahindra off-road SUVs.
Next up, he starts driving on the course, and during his drive, he mentions that the SUV will not be coming to Australia. He added that he has just been invited to test out the capabilities of the new Thar and so far he is extremely impressed. He states that he is driving the petrol automatic variant of the Thar and according to him, it’s very easy to drive. With the help from the low range transfer case, this Thar is easily tackling tough off-road terrains.
Criticisms of the Mahindra Thar
As for the criticism, the presenter stated that the new Mahindra Thar is not very comfortable, and its ride is very bumpy. However, he added that it is a part of its characteristics. Apart from this, he added that the turbo petrol is throttle happy and controlling the power on an off-road course is a task in itself. He also emphasized that the brakes felt a little squishy but he stated that it could be due to the fact that this test vehicle has been driven and abused for quite a while. Lastly, he added that the auto electronic rear and front differential. The presenter stated that this system worked after the vehicle started slipping, which with a manual differential locker vehicle does not happen.
Final thoughts
Towards the end of the video, the presenter mentions that the Mahindra Thar is a very capable vehicle in an affordable price range. He mentions that if this became available in Australia, it would cost around $20,000-$30,000, which is amazing considering its performance. He also stated that Indians are very lucky to have this SUV.
